RE: GaSo vs Florida
We will not be bulking up lineman. Our offense uses smaller, quick lineman that cut block a lot. That is one reason why our offense will do very good in the sun belt right now. Our defense on the other hand will need to add some size.

Da Fators aren't too worried about being gukked by a 1-AA team.

The D-lines you face will be bigger, faster and stronger than your O-line EVERY week for a few years...........

It happens "once in a blue moon" and App St. over Michigan was it for quite a long while yet as far as FBS goes.

GS fans said this same stuff about North Dakota State when they transitioned from DII. We quickly got a double dose of humble pie. I would not discount winning programs like GS and App St.

I give up. GaSo will go undefeated 8 years in a row and win the National championship 29 out of the next 30 years.
Grandaddy always stressed to never argue with fools as passer-bys won't know who is who. You win.

Ole Grandaddy must have been a wise man, too bad his warning never reached us.
Never seen so many self-appointed authorities on a program they know little about.
GS will never have a football team. They will never be able to compete in
1-AA, never win a National Championship, never move to FBS.......

We will have a lot of experienced seniors next year. Add the fact that teams usually struggle with the triple option the first time, we will do well.
It'll work for a game or two until film on how to defend it gets around, and then your success will drop off the map due to your offensive lines being outplayed by bigger and stronger defensive linemen than you've ever faced week-in, week-out.
The triple option won't get it in this league.
Oh, I suspect it will 'get it.'
The offense isn't perfect, no. And it can and has been stopped. But it tends to work pretty well and can be successful at any level. Especially if it remains unique enough that teams don't have time to prepare for it.
But the offense alone won't win games. Georgia Southern will have to play defense and special teams to win against good opponents. We've seen that at the FCS level -- it won't be any different in FBS.
What will be different is, as you say, the level of depth and size and strength.
But hopefully we'll eventually have the numbers to run opponents ragged. Those bigger and stronger defensive linemen will perhaps face faster and more agile players in numbers and they'll get winded. At some point, our depth should keep players fresher.
I just know If I were coach I'd certainly be looking for linemen to run the game at a pace that would wear opposing defenses out. I'd use alternate linemen on different series, etc.
Course, I'm no coach. I just love watching the offense when it works.
Every defense in the SunBelt plays weekly against hurry up no huddle offenses. You won't be able to run anybody's defense out of gas.
Until your O-line and D-line bulk up to size, every Saturday will be a learning experience.
This is probably the best post you've made. The only posts that really irritate me from other schools' fans are the ones that are nothing but LOL OPTION SUCKS AMIRITE? Nevermind the fact that any spread offense using zone read principles are fundamentally the same as us, just with different formations, but I digress.
One thing in our favor is that we can use smaller OL with blocking schemes that put them at an advantage even with the size difference. It's not all cutting either, although that is a common type of block used. A properly delivered cut block will also not injure a defender, but will effectively take him out of the play.
On DL you are right, we'll slowly add some size all over on that side of the ball. However, we're not exactly full of AA high school players either. The biggest concern in my mind is our secondary and LB corps. Those issues are being addressed, we just need some time to get caught up all the way down the depth chart as well.

RE: GaSo vs Florida
The biggest fallacy of all when playing the comparison game is believing that BCS teams always give you their A-Game.
I have a PERFECT example:
2012 Season
Game 1: #3 LSU 41, UNT 14
Game 3: #15 KSU 35, UNT 21
Game 4: Troy 14, UNT 7
Tons of mean green fans pointed at the first two scores and talked all kinds of bs about how there was NO WAY Troy could ever win in apogee. Do you honestly think Troy's defense was better than KSUs and LSUs? No way.
So every time you guys point to what you did to Alabama and Georgia, I'll remind you it means nothing. They aren't thinking about you. They're thinking about the next team on the schedule after you guys. Just because a coach gives you props doesn't mean there's not some coach speak rolled up inside.
Also on Florida: Three time defending SBC Champ Troy was down 35-0 at the half to UF in 2009. We had the #3 total offense in the country that year and racked up a mere 137 yards. If they WANT to, they can beat the mess out of you. I LOVE that we're getting two strong programs in ASU and GSU, but lets not get delusional and think ASU got Michigan's A-Game. It's a great win, but the reality is most of the time, they don't prepare for SBC and FCS like they do for their conference mates.
We shared the SBC title in 2010 and were down to South Carolina 56-7 at the half. Lets stop the comparisons, we'll see what happens soon enough.

RE: GaSo vs Florida
lets also not be delusional and think SBC teams get their (top 10 teams) A-game.
It is very likely UF beats us by 21pts, but it is also possible that GSU keeps it close til the very end. It's hard to really say how well any team will do in a new season, but simply based on returning players and whats on paper GSU should go 9-2 or better this year. IF UF doesn't bring their A-game and GSU does, then it's going to be a close contest.

RE: GaSo vs Florida
What other teams have done has little consequence on what happens.
History is important, true, but when you have so many variables involved in
switching to the FBS, there is less likelihood that those same scenarios will play out.
Hopefully GaSo and App State have learned from history already.
