RE: Row the Boat
There were some guys rowing the boat at a blackjack table in Firekeepers Casino a few weeks back. It must have worked, they were winning.

Colin was obviously being sarcastic. Tough to tell on the other two.

Speaking of payouts there was a crew that got arrested recently for using a light wand on the slot machines. It causes the machine to make larger payouts each time you win. They took in $ 10,000 at a Kewadin casino up north!

RE: Row the Boat
Maryland has HOLD THE ROPE. Is that any better than ROW THE BOAT?
Why do I have a feeling these guys got this idea from a convention? I can just see it.

Maryland's motto is, "Fear the Turtle". So "hold the rope" does not sound that bad for them.

What do you see Edsall doing this year? I got 4-8. He is a joke.

Agreed. Edsall resembles the car he is named after. In my opinion they got what they deserved after letting Friedgen go (and paying $2M to buy him out).

RE: Row the Boat
I think if we get some big wins and they do their job also getting fans to the game -- you'll see people wearing Row The Boat shirts. Oh yeah. You'll see drunk kids on the sidewalks on Saturday night trying to canoe to the next bar.
If we bomb out, the last thing you'll see is the Row The Boat mantra everywhere.

Todd, you have mentioned multiple times them doing their job and getting fans to the game. My question, (and this has been asked since January now) is it really the coaches job to get fannies in seats? Shouldn't he be working on coaching? Just saying. And that isn't a slight at PJ, that's more a question for the administration and what they expect.

It is the coaches job to get butts in the seats. Win football games and they will come. In good years Waldo has good crowds.
Admin may be responsible for marketing the program, but you first need a product to sell. Creating the product is the coaches job.

That's not in the context they were discussing the job of getting people to attend.

My point is that if we can't win, no one is going to be interested in coming, no matter what promotions are run.

Valid point to think about, yes. But you could say the same thing about recruiting or charities or "being part of the community". PJ Fleck is the kind of guy that you wonder if he's on amphetamines and going to work non-stop -- which is a good thing. But he doesn't have to micro-manage that at all, but help guide it. "Let's do a, b, and c..." when situations arise, notably during the off-season/recruiting season... where other people take his direction and handle it, but he's pointing them in the direction. I think especially for an overly-energetic coach, that's not going to swallow his time or take at all from coaching.
Coaches get involved in recruiting, charities, etc -- what the heck are they doing not coaching?? Think of it LIKE dealing with recruiting (more fans helps recruiting)... and if we're going to praise a coach for "being part of the community", part of that is directing things to get more fans to the game.
Of course all that is moot if we're having 3-4 win seasons. That's obviously the primary focus.

RE: Row the Boat
OK. I wont disagree with any of that.
But, the issue that I take with the statement about PJ putting butts in seats, is that this was a stated responsibility at the original press conference from KB. Had she said, the goal is to win which will result in better attendance, ok. But that isn't how this was presented in that press conference or in other interviews that I have read and heard. It IS PJs responsibility to get people to come to the games, and while I think he is doing his best to accomplish that. And while I hope it happens because its embarrassing when I sit there every week in a half full stadium. I just don't think that THIS is the coaches job.

RE: Row the Boat
Friedgen was canned at the end of 2010 season at Maryland after going 9-4, winning a bowl game and voted ACC coach of the year. AD said that attendance was dropping off and blamed it on the coach.
So WMU is not the only one expecting the head coach to impact attendance.
