A Crying Shame
http://www.theclemsoninsider.com/2013/07...ing-shame/

Quote:The Atlantic Coast Conference named its Male and Female Athlete of the Year winners on Tuesday. Virginia men’s tennis player Jarmere Jenkins won the men’s honor, and North Carolina women’s soccer stud Crystal Dunn took home the women’s award.

Both have impressive track records in athletics and in the classroom. Both are positive role models who are respected within their respective university communities. Both are nationally renowned in the sport they represent.

So what, exactly, is the big deal here?

The answer is simple. Neither of these athletes is the best in the country at what they do. Both are among the best college athletes in the United States, but they cannot stand up when standing side-by-side with professionals.

Brianna Rollins can.

Quote:Rollins is a three-time NCAA champion, which is—amazingly—among the more pedestrian accomplishments of her Clemson tenure. At the national collegiate outdoor track and field meet, she set the NCAA record in the 100 hurdles, which is her specialty, with a time of 12.39 seconds.

But Rollins went one step further. At the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she broke the American record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 12.26 seconds. To put this into perspective, the record she broke was set 13 years ago—an eternity and a half by track and field standards—by former Olympian Gail Devers.

Quote:Let’s call this what it is: The Triangle media selected one of their own, while a world class Clemson Tiger got the shaft. It’s nothing new, but it is incredibly frustrating. This is the way the world works in the ACC.

If you don’t believe me, answer this question: If Rollins wore baby blue, would she be accepting this award? And if Dunn were a Clemson alum, would her accomplishments still merit the award over Rollins?

RE: A Crying Shame
What are the criteria for the awards? Is it sports performance alone or are there other components like academic accomplishments and volunteerism in the community? Look at the heisman award. In many cases the winner of this award is NOT the best athlete who will go onto having a HOF career. You see slapnuts like Desmond Howard and "Mr. Football" win the award while HOF caliber athletes like Curtis Martin and Larry Fitzgerald were never really in the running.

I don't think there is anything to see here tbh.

Athletic accomplishment alone.

45 of 56* Men's winners and 18 of 24** Women's winners are from the four NC schools or UVA. Clemson has had a grand total of one winner, Kris Benson (pitcher).

* From 1980 to 1989 there was just one award for both men and women

** No women were eligible until 1980

Brianna, who wasn't good enough for the ACC, won Gold in the 100m hurdles at the
World Games. She beat the previous two Olympic gold medalists.

Wasn't sure what your picture had to do with the thread. At first I thought it was what UVA hauled their football and basketball trophies around in, but then I remembered you could do that in a cart behind a riding lawn mower with ease.

Suddenly it hit me that was how UVA got their 4 football fans to away games. It still didn't fit with the thread but I understand your pride in the fact that y'all have finally moved up from the motorcycle and sidecar y'all had been using for all these years.

RE: A Crying Shame
The "lamestream" media can say what they want but in my mind Brianna Rollins will always be the ACC's 2012-13 Female Athlete of the Year. Is there a petition anywhere I can sign to have this grave injustice overturned?

I guess I'm showing my age. I thought it was a reference to The Who's song "Magic Bus". Oh well...
