MB, if Gene had that attitude we'd never have started basketball in the first place.
We *will* overcome the crap that the BOT and the bammer mouthbreathers put out... but not by folding our tents and skulking off when faced with difficulties.

If a stadium is in the capital campaign they should say as much. I think they would which is why, directly anyway, it isn't.
Sure, more money for the school can be linked tangentially to an eventual stadium, and yes, there is something to be said about operating within the confines of the BOT prison we find ourselves in at the moe~ment...
Enough with this BS though, OMG, let's throw down the gauntlet already. Our Official leadership is going to have to man up and declare war.
Bare it and we'll all share it. Robert E. Lee didnt want to go to war against the union, but his leaders (well, the state of VA) forced his hand. An unofficial skirmish (#freeuab) here and there, while noble and gallant in every way, will never occupy any real ground.
No leader can lead from behind.
isolate and reduce the enemy. remove his ability and or willingness to fight.

UAB's best hope may well be that the system BOT will at some point over-reach in its desire to hobble UAB athletics and produce the same chagrin among Tide fans that Updike did by poisoning those oak trees.
One sure thing is that if the contest involves political power or "power of the purse", the BOT holds all the winning cards. A school who can sustain annual spending of about $200,000 per athlete has to be a favorite in any contest with a school that can't match half that.

The strategic plan is of more vital importance to the ongoing success of UAB athletics that an football stadium would ever be.
The sequester and other budget cutting measure on the federal level means that the total amount of research dollars is declining. The SP will devote little money to facilities at all but focus on monies to directly attract new researchers and grant funding. UAB's strategic plan hopefully will increase UABs share of the decreasing pie and UAB can at least break even in research dollars.
On this board we tend to forget that UAB invests 20 million a year in supporting our current ongoing athletic budget. Almost all of this funding for athletics comes from the indirect (overhead) funds generated by research dollars. The threat from diminished research dollars is a direct danger to UAB athletics more than the @#&& BOT has ever been.
I want a OCS and hope we do not give up on it. But our administration rightly has other priorities to solve other UAB problems first. We can think about the BOT opposition to an OCS later

I can envision a series of specialty centers-a world class head trauma research unit, something specializing in the effects of concussions on high school athletes, maybe another related to developing major projects in orthopedics, things along those lines in a series of buildings that could be tucked into the side of a stadium-ie dorms at LSU/ the stadium at FSU. Of course right in the middle the football field. It would be the kind of synergy that would make sense from a funding, educational, and maybe even medical standpoint.

Can we go with you on record saying that. So when it is built you can't come back saying "See to you guys we'll get it one day" or "That's what happens when you dont give up"
I'm like Smaug, I'm gonna keep buying season tickets, even when I know I can't make it, and keep rooting for my team till the day I can sit in my own stadium with my sons and just relax in the blaze of it.

I think that was more a grammar observation. I can't imagine ever saying "See to you guys we'll get it one day" either.

I was watching ABC 33/40 this evening & saw where they interpreted this as "the stadium wouldn't be built for a several years".
Kind of sad how they tend to stretch things.
Nowhere did it say one way or another that it wouldn't be built for several years. It was just not a top strategic priority.

Certainly not built within the next 2 years. Not necessarily not started though.

Thanks Mr. Watts. You just joined the Board of Trustees by thrusting our dreams and UABs Footballs ambitions into the doldrums.

Funny how the local media reads more into this than is there.
Just because it isn't a top strategic priority doesn't mean it isn't being addressed.
They know the gump retards go ballistic when they see it in the headlines.
