Between the two, I have to side with the JR. I have never liked the pirate head logo and refuse to buy any ECU gear with the head on it. I actually prefer the block letters ECU over either.

I like the Jolly Roger, but not on the helmets. The collegiate thing to do is to have the letters on your helmet. The only schools that can get away with it are USC, FSU, Texas, and SMU.
I only wish that the letters were a traditional block style.

I had this crazy idea of putting ECU under the skull n bones on the helment! What a concept. Sometimes I wonder what we're paying some of our people for.

I wish they would drop the cross bones on the and use this, just make it larger on the helmet.

That would be too much going on. Never add to fix, always subtract, that's a major rule of design.

It's such a varied mark with so many different aspects to it's tradition, that ECU is really doing itself a disservice by being so... benign.
This. I actually went with Pirate because I feel like the Jolly Roger can be so much more unique and intimidating. Scrap it and get a new one.

Ya know, when we introduced that logo it always looked to me that we took the "pose" of the Pirate and made a human head for a skull swap out with not much effort. Word on the street was even putting the JR out there was controversial because of being "scary" for marketing purposes yet it outsells all the other logos now. I think we could make it better though.

Both logos have their places in the industry and are used accordingly. Though I think ECU would do well to have a prominant logo that was easily identifiable in white sillouhette. The old baseball locked E C U in diagonal could be used but I've never seen it in white sillouhette, like OU, M, VT, or NC.

Really? There are many times at work when the graphic artist comes to me with a design saying this needs something else and we talk about what could ba added or changed. Then something else is added to make it look better before we submit it to the customer for approval. My idea for the helments would make the skull and bones smaller but with a more detailed outline and add a simple ECU in gold lettering under the skull & bones.

Jolly Roger is way more unique and visually appealing.

It's too small as it is, on TV you can't really make it out, unless they zoom in on a player's helmet.
And, yes most of the time adding takes away. BTW, my degree is in design and graphic arts.

RE: Which school mark for ECU: Jolly Roger or Pirate?
I've never liked the new bearded pirate logo. Old school struttin' PeeDee was much better. I feel like the skull and crossbones should be the primary mark, and use struttin' PeeDee as a throwback secondary.
Primary:
Secondary: Old School PeeDee
As for the Helmets, use the Primary mark or some variation of ECU or Pirates. I like the script pirates, and the ECU bar (which I can't find a pic of online at the moment). A version of the angled ECU from the baseball uniforms would look good too.
