More of a one year blip for UCF rather than a trend, the 885 last year resulted from transfers related to NCAA sanctions. The NCAA has done some crazy things, but it would be a stretch to impose sanctions caused by sanctions.
The NCAA retroactively punished UConn, after UConn had already served the previous penalty of a 2 scholarship reduction. Double jeopardy is illegal in the court of law, but not when it comes to organizations like the NCAA. This is why us UConn fans were so furious. We were already punished and never had time to adjust. Unfortunately we don't have a time machine in Storrs. That said UCF and Houston need almost perfect scores to remain eligible for the 2015 tournament which will be based on a 4 year average.

The NCAA doesn't have to follow rules, reason, logic, or previous decisions. They just make s*** up as they go.

Professor Mallett really is taking his sweet time with that time machine.

@RobUCF - all it takes is a one year slip up and one year of mediocre scores to be banned, especially with the NCAA raising the minimum requirement to 930-4 year average and 940 2 year average next year and then doing away with the 2 year average the following season.

Improvement from last year yes, but almost perfect scores - sure doesn't seem like it. Based on my math (and I'm far from a mathmetician), UCF would need a score of 938 in 12/13 in order to maintain a four year average of 930. 938 is not that high and, while I haven't seen a full list for basketball, would fall in the 30-40% range for football. Yes, trouble could come down the road when that 10/11 964 falls off the four year, but by then the 885 would fall off the two year.
Also, and I'm no expert on this but maybe you UCONN guys can educate me, but according to what I've read regarding FIU's penalties, and the always reliable source that is Wikipedia:
Teams with Academic Progress Rates below 900 face additional sanctions, increasing in severity for each consecutive year the team fails to meet the standard.
Year 1: a public warning letter for poor performance
Year 2: restrictions on scholarships and practice time
Year 3: loss of postseason competition for the team (such as a bowl game or the men's basketball tournament)
Year 4: restricted membership status for an institution. The school's entire athletics program is penalized and will not be considered a part of Division I.[8]
So, if this is correct, falling under for 1 year would not result in a postseason ban it would have to stay under.
