AP story shows good idea of how articles will refer to new league
Despite Aresco's moronic attempt to brand it as "The American".

This article's headline calls it AAC, the article refers to the full name - American Athletic Conference, and the A logo is used.

But not once is it referred to as "The American". (Thank God).

true, but a lot of folks did not want the league to be referred to as the American - just showing an AP article today that seemed to use every incarnation of the league name, but that.

Who cares what they call us. Win and they'll have to mention us and I wouldn't care what they call us.

Privately, believe all AAC Officials/AD's want the conf to be mostly known by these 3 letters: AAC.

Believe Aresco's public stance on using "AMERICAN" is just to placate that other conf which also goes by AAC...and if he is not the one leading the charge (let the public domain decide), then I think it will be the best for all (vs if he was solely pushing "AAC").

RE: AP story shows good idea of how articles will refer to new league
In the media world of the associated press... journalists write the stories, and newspaper and website folks create a headline that makes the impact or fits the space they have.

In the article itself, which is everything after the (AP) acknowledgement... NOT ONCE in that article is it called the AAC. The conference is referred to multiple times by its full name, the "American Athletic Conference."

The headline from someone else calls it the AAC and the photo the story is wrapped around is the simple A logo with the word "AMERICAN" underneath. Sooooo I don't think this answers anything actually. In the end, it won't be what Yahoo's web people that define it, but what media partners ESPN/ABC and CBS end up referring to it as, that everyone else will run with... because the media clips and footage will come from them!

Despite Aresco's pronouncements, nobody was going to call us "The American". Sounds way too pretentious for a G5 conference and hell, all of the other conferences are "American" too.

We will be known as the AAC or the American Athletic Conference.

@ESPNAndyKatz: American makes it official with Memphis pick with men's tourney site. Good call.

RE: AP story shows good idea of how articles will refer to new league
Typically, each publication has a style book that will make this type of decision. Once the editors determine the manner a name will be handled, it becomes part of the style book so the publication is uniform regardless of the writer. Of course, blogs and small publications don't have this--but the big outfits like AP or Rueters do.

The conference also pesters publications that don't follow the preferred labeling, so most will likely fall in line eventually. I don't care much for the "American" moniker (I prefer AAC)-- but it probably will be the most common shorthand name for the conference. I also suspect we will see an advertising campaign that will push the name "American" making it far more likely that the name becomes common vernacular.
