There is all this talk of changing the culture.

Implies the existing culture wasn't or isn't any good.

And that the existing traditional fan base is all wet.

Some find that part of it downright offensive.

How about a little humility and gratitude for the opportunity to take over a fine tradition here?

Ernie, you hit the nail on the head with this one. THIS is exactly what has some of my football alumni friends very skeptical. In fact, the words that were used when they recieved a letter from PJ a few months back was OFFENDED. I'm not a football alum so I didnt get this letter, but what my friends said or at least how they took it was that this program is garbage and everything you've done in the past whether playing or supporting it is garbage.

I'm 100% sure that this isnt how PJ intended for it to be taken, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that this IS how it was taken and those alums are not in his corner at all. They will keep on supporting their Broncos, but they dont have a whole lot of love for the new coach. Like I mentioned previously, this is exactly what Rich Rod did when he got to UofM. He honked off the alums and supporters and never had a chance. Granted he turned out to be a crappy coach and didnt win, but he was doomed from the get go.

I got the letter but I had already heard all of the stuff.

I suppose I am one of the few that has hope, and I'm fine with that. If that makes me predictable, than I guess I'm one of the few glass half full individuals here. I'll take that. I just find it humorous how quickly you get your panties in a bunch the second someone doesn't tow YOUR line. That is all.

Now let me re-iterate... I am not blind to some of the tilted rhetoric that spouts forth from our newly appointed HC. I can agree that some of his speeches are getting tiresome. I do worry that all of these catch phrases and acronyms might get more confusing to a player than Cubits offensive play book. However, I support his way of thinking with regard to changing what has become a stagnant culture surrounding the team, the students, the alumni and community in Kalamazoo.

Agree that Fleck's coach talk is somewhat juvenile, however, the starters on both sides like him. If they are motivated maybe we have a chance at being 3-2 at the end of September!

Nice attempt at projection, I've said all along we need this guy to win, and you're allowed to think what you want. Those undermining "I see the GOOD" and "I'm one of the few glass half full types" statements here is very telling about who's getting their panties in a bunch, as well as your lame baiting attempt at the beginning of this thread.

Quote:Whats the over-under on how long it takes DB to respond to my "goose-stepping" commentary?

YOU were trolling for a fight and instead got thoughtful and thorough replies from many explaining their position.

It was fun to see you back peddle after I wasn't the only one who took your bait. 03-phew 03-rotfl

Now get over it.

Seriously, how long are you (and others) going to hang on to this? "He doesn't appreciate my previous fandom!" "By being relentlessly positive about the future, he MUST be pissing on the past!"

Ugh, your whining about it is just at exhausting as Fleck's relentless energy.

He isn't trashing anything that was here before him. Oversensitive fans might take it that way, but I don't believe he is trying in any way to diminish Cubit.

I'm not 100% in the 'boat' with Fleck, but only because we have no idea if the guy can coach. I have no problem whatsoever with his message about where the program is going. I hope like hell he can bring us championships.

Ahhh - But he has dissed our past. I have heard him speak on several occasions. You should have been there for his pregame game talk to the Gary Fund prior the spring game. He really dissed our football past and everything that was accomplished. Dismissed our entire history as nothing more than two lonely MAC championships in 60+ years of the conference. Talked about what an awful program he inherited and where he was going to take it. Dissed the prior leadership, the prior players, the weak fan base.

And the irony of it all is that after he dissed our history and program. He invited Jordan White to step up and speak. That spoke volumes!!

Ahhh - but I was there, too. Only the most sensitive old-timers took it that way. He never said it was an 'awful program'. His focus was on championships. He understands that to generate interest from our students and new alumni, we have to win championships. He knows - as we all know - that 2 championships in the last 60 years is NOT enough. Especially when the last one came 25 years ago.

Like I said, get over it. Let's hope he can coach.

You say Get Over It, and you hope we can win. Fine.

Well sure, I am over it. Been over it. Don't like it, but whatever.

I hope and wish he can coach, and manage the head coach role. We had a whole another thread on hoping and wishing about stuff.

The original administration statement was they were going to bring in a proven winner in order to meet the objective of winning championships and bowl games. They couldn't get that. That is when we shifted to a culture change, wish and hope, build a solid foundation approach.

I'm over that too.

And sorry, we already had a solid foundation. Not built on water either.

I hope and wish he can coach and win. That is where we are at. I'm on record with a 4 win season. If more than that we can talk.

Sooner or later it gets to the put up or shut up stage. So far we haven't had much of the later.

For the put up part, players stayed mostly and the recruiting looks good on paper. So kudos on that part of it. The constant jabbering, heard it all before.

The 'put-up' stage will be here very soon. I don't see more than 6 wins. If he can't coach, 3 wins.

Having met and known Belt over the years, he's one of the most level headed, thoughtful and nice men I've had the pleasure to have known. Very objective as well, he has no problem calling me out when he thinks I'm overly negative or off on one of my tangents.

I trust Belt's take on what he heard 100%,

Your right, he did not use the word awful. I was paraphrasing, and that is how he described the program he inherited, in so many words. Maybe I am a "most sensitive old timer" (I resent the old timer more than the sensitive), but my wife was with me and she heard it the same way I did. He spoke disparagingly about WMU's football past and it was all negative. I interpret that as saying our program was awful.

Since you were there you heard him talk about how he was going to bring in a better class of kids, and how they would play much better than those that came before. So after dissing prior players he invites Jordan White to talk. Go figure.

I really did not like him dissing the prior teams and players. Cubit, for the most part, recruited quality kids and held them to a high standard regarding character. He got the kids involved in the community. Yet PJ had to say that he was going to get the kids to give to the community, and he said it as if it had never been done before at WMU.

Maybe I am sensitive. These are my Broncos. I take'em with both the good and the bad. In my opinion anyone who joins the university, in any capacity, should show some respect for the history of the school and all its institutions.

And like all Bronco fans, I do hope he can coach! After all he was hired to raise the bar on our prior level of success, limited as it was.

BRING IT ON HOME PJ! I miss seeing fans in the end zones and on the hills!

I was at the bowl game in Detroit the year before, I took that as a sign our program had a good foundation, tough loss against a much richer program, but then I try to see the good in things and not dwell on the negatives like you guys do. 03-cloud9
