Its not like their putting this team right next to NYRB either; it'll actually be in the city, in Queens, which alone has 2.3 million people, many of whom are recent immigrants from countries with a high interest in soccer.
Ding!
Harrison, NJ (home of the Red Bulls) isn't really penetrating much into NYC...which is why and its a no-brainer to add a team IN New York City this time around...which will help the MLS grow.
I doubt a team in North Carolina (which some poster thinks is such a great idea) would have attracted investors like Man City or the New York Yankees...or attracted the chance to build a $340 Million Soccer stadium.
All of that occurred (Man City, Yankees, $340 Million stadium) because this team will be in New York City.
That is my point though. The NYRB COULD'VE BEEN in NYC and the 20th team could've gone to a new market. MLS had the power to veto the new stadium until they proposed a space in the city to put it.
I'm sorry I just dont see the need of having two NY teams when they could've forced the one they had into NYC to begin with.

I found this map of EPL teams (based on this past season):
http://www.sportmapworld.com/map/soccer/...er-league/
Interestingly, out of 20 teams, only 6 are the only team in their metro area, 5 if you count Wigan as part of greater Manchester:
Swansea
Norwich
Stoke
Southampton
Reading
Wigan
London has 6: Fulham, Chelsea, QPR, Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham (four in the Championship
West Midlands has 2 with 2 in the championship
Manchester has 2 (three counting Wigan) plus Bolton in the championship.
Tyne and Wear has 2
Merseyside has 2
Of course, it's apples to oranges. You'd have to combine NYC, LA and maybe Chicago and SF to get a US city that is as important to us as London is to England and the other major conurbations dwarf the smaller cities. And on top of that the areas within a UK metro area tend to have much more local identity and history than exists within most of our big metros....
Still, cool maps. I like maps.

I was looking at both Premiership and Championship levels
And it was more of a reference that it could be worse for PR2012

They've always wanted a second team in NYC though.
A second NYC team is a lot more valuable than a team in NC, Atlanta, or Orlando because there is simply more people and more national media in NY.
I don't know why you don't get it. But 2 teams in a 20 million person market is always going to be greater than 1 team in a 2-6 million person market.
NYC2 also had the backing of Man City & the Yankees. Its the perfect set up for MLS.

for those of you who don't know... Chelsea vs. Manchester City playing in Busch stadium tonight. They say 44,000 tickets were a sell out in a matter of hours when they went on sale...

They offered Pre-sale tix to Cards season ticket holders the day before they went on sale to the general public. The Cards fans bought basically all the tickets, and what was left sold out in 14 minutes after going public. The Cards fans (for the most part) have no interest in going but are using the opportunity to gouge true soccer fans by jacking tickets up to several hundred dollars above face value on the secondhand market.

What you're not getting is the fact soccer fans in the Southeast have no incentive to follow the MLS since there is no team near them yet NY gets a second team. This is why the MLS will never get as popular as EPL.here in the states

No one from Mississippi or Florida is going to care about, nor follow, a team in Atlanta or Charlotte. The great bulk of mls fan support is fairly local. It would not be like the situation with the braves, in which they become the south's team. MLS just doesn't, nor likely ever will, have that kind of casual fan support.
Also, the EPL remains more popular because its the most elite soccer league that has primary commentary in English.

Yeah, I wasn't really replying to your comment directly so much as it piqued my curiosity so I looked it up.

Yep, I follow EPL as closely as I follow Rice, but have no idea what's going on in MLS. If I lived in an MLS town, it might be different.

This is not the reason why the MLS will never get as popular as the EPL in the states. There isn't one specific reason why either.
mufan had a pretty good explanation of the regional but not regional thing.(Atlanta is not Charlotte is not Tampa)
There is also the quality of play thing. If the MLS was as good to watch as the EPL is, I'd drive 8-10 hours to Columbus or Kansas City to go watch a game. As it currently is, unless there was a team in Nashville or Atlanta, I just can't rationalize that drive to watch an inferior product.
There is also the fact that soccer is #1 over in England. Soccer is #4 at best in America.
Also, I'm willing to bet that the New York has a denser population then any area in the Southeast can offer. I'm sure a lot of people who know a lot more than you or I do put a lot of thought into where this team would be located.

Bundesliga and La Liga laughs in your face.

Bundesliga - GOLTV (English commentary and may be bought out by BeIN)
La Liga - BeIN (English commentary)

I'm not sure about La Liga....While they may have two of the 5 or 6 most elite clubs in the world, the rest of the league is not that impressive to me. It really seems to be a barbell approach.

In the US those channels are their primary contracts thus making it primary commentary.

While I agree La Liga is top heavy, EPL isn't much better. ManU, ManC, Chelsea, Aresnal will all finish in top 4-5 ~99% of the time. While I do feel that is starting to shift a bit (Spurs, Everton, Racists making strides) right now it's those 4 and everyone else.

Bundesliga - GOLTV (English commentary and may be bought out by BeIN)
La Liga - BeIN (English commentary)
How many Americans know that those options exist though?
To find such tertiary options takes real effort.
The EPL on the other hand has English as its native language, which means all an aspiring soccer fan has to do is type EPL into Google to get a wealth of excellent online commentary and analysis from the BBC and the Daily Mail. Or turn on ESPN (NBC next season) to watch the game with English commentators and players (who by and large) can speak English during their interviews. Because of this, the EPL will always be more identifiable amongst Americans than Bundesliga and La Liga.
