Quote:1. FORLAN HEADING TO MLS?

It's been awhile since we've heard this one, but this twist is new. According to reports in South America this morning, former Manchester United, Atlético Madrid and Villarreal striker Diego Forlán could be heading to Major League Soccer. The 33-year-old Uruguayan forward is apparently seeking a switch to MLS, with Independiente in Argentina also interested in signing the player of the tournament from the 2010 World Cup. “I like the MLS a lot,” Forlan said. “I have gone there on holiday a lot. I would love to go.”

We only lose if our lasagna is poisoned. Sunderland will have 12 senior players to choose from and their best player this season(Danny Rose) is loan tied. Lennon is going to burn their left all day and then drive up to the Academy of Light and burn it to the f'ing ground.

WTS, we could draw.

I watched 4 soccer games like the Spurs game this weekend, and my team had the best chances in the game and my sides ended with 2 wins (my youngest's team and Spurs), 1 tie (Earthquakes), and 1 loss (my daughter's team). Soccer is a funny sport. There are just days that the goal seems so small.

Are Red Bulls so popular NYC needs a second team? Just asking, honestly have no idea. Where will Becks and Posh buy their team?

this is disappointing to me...i don't think nyc needs a second team, but i also don't think florida needs a team. they were poorly supported years ago, thus leading to dissolution. i know the times have changed, but i don't think it would have been fully supported in florida.

who knows what will happen with chivas...wouldn't mind them moving to the midwest/southeast some where...

So instead of expanding their brand into the southeast like most wanted/needed they added:

- A 3rd Canadian team
- A "2nd" NY team

Again why didn't they just move the Red Bulls closer to or in the city if they wanted a team in NYC.

Now I guess we try to move Chives and Rev to Atlanta and NC...

They just spent a lot of money building a new stadium in NJ.

the NYC area has 20 million people in it. And this new team will be on the other side of the city from the RBs in an area with a high foreign born population.

At the end of the day, this is a business decision and the numbers said that a second team in NYC is more feasible than a team in the SE.

Okay, why didn't they spend a lot of money building a new stadium in NYC? NYC isn't a new goal for the MLS, it's been a goal for a while now.

Also I'm sick of every league NEEDING two teams in LA and NY.

Yankees will always outdraw Mets
Dodgers/Angels I'm not too sure on
Lakers will always outdraw Clippers
Knicks will always outdraw Nets
Giants will always outdraw Jets
LAG will always outdraw Chives

Have one team per city please and thank you

Because the ownership group found a good deal out in Harrison.

+ The NYC2 team has always been in the works; they were simply waiting for the best ownership group to come along.

Bulls*it is bulls*it no matter what color you paint it. If you want to extend your brand you don't have 2 teams in the same metro.

Why on earth would leagues limit themselves like that. There are 20 million people in NYC metro. That's 10 million per team, which is double that of any city in the south.

It could also be worse. NYC and LA could be like London and Manchester and have nearly all the teams.

Because you need to expand your brand. I'm in NC and we have no MLB or NBA team. Not saying I would support an NC MLB team (I'm a D-Backs and Nats fan fan) but it'll be better than being fed Braves news/games all the time (luckily Braves games on FSSouth are blacked out and I get O's and Nats on MASN).

RE: OT: The New New Soccer Thread
But they are expanding their brand by increasing their penetration into America's premier city. A second team in NYC will reach millions more people than a team in Raleigh or Charlotte ever would. They also have the ability to host a derby with NYRB, which will capture the interest of NY media and perhaps most of the city.

Its not like their putting this team right next to NYRB either; it'll actually be in the city, in Queens, which alone has 2.3 million people, many of whom are recent immigrants from countries with a high interest in soccer.

Ding!

Harrison, NJ (home of the Red Bulls) isn't really penetrating much into NYC...which is why and its a no-brainer to add a team IN New York City this time around...which will help the MLS grow.

I doubt a team in North Carolina (which some poster thinks is such a great idea) would have attracted investors like Man City or the New York Yankees...or attracted the chance to build a $340 Million Soccer stadium.

All of that occurred (Man City, Yankees, $340 Million stadium) because this team will be in New York City.

they will as soon as:
- the ownership group come up with the $100M entry fee
- a Soccer Specific Stadium
- a sponsor with $$$ and national rep

Orlando just needs the stadium, the Florida legislature threw them a curve ball last month but they may regroup

Miami and Tampa had a chance and blew it - only foreign money may peak the interest of MLS

Atlanta on needs the Falcon owner to get board financially he has given verbal support though

STL need the Busch family's support

San Antonio has already given Chivas USA ownership a proposal that has not been accepted because they don't want to move from LA yet. SA has a new stadium with plenty of room for expansion.
