Really cool read. ECu has a new practical accelerator for Physics Department and is research into medical applications, particularly with fight cancer.

This is a very promising medical endeavor. I hope ECU finds a cure....

Well Europe and Japan are way ahead of us as the story says. They are using carbon beams and US researchers are just starting to into proton beams. We are trying to catch up to them and who knows maybe from looking at other research we can try something different and maybe, just maybe find a cure or a better more effective treatment with far fewer side affects.

That's one area the new practical accelerator will help. But, we are just getting started a d the accelerator will be used for more than just the medical research. There are a ton of applications that will help many of the programs here and most importantly get more research going at ECU. The more the better, the higher amount of research can will bring more money to keep expanding the research. That's what it going to take to find a cure.

Unfortunately there isn't going to be just one "cure". There are over 200 types of cancer so their will not just be one treatment modality.

IIRC, ECU has one of the better Family Medicine programs in the Southeast, if not the US? However it's very cool that they are looking to expand their research efforts!

Red and Black, Purple and Gold, Red and Blue...regardless of colors, mascots, locations...we're all on the same team when it comes to stuff like this. I'm all in for any school's educational endeavours...especially one that could impact so many people moving forward.

I'm really proud of how far ECU's research programs have come in the short time i've been paying attention to them. I'm excited to move to a point of my college career where I can take part in some of it (Non-medical for me).

I really hope the students and professors at brody can keep this momentum going and find cures for devastating diseases.

Sadly, took the words out of my mouth. Cancer is a large catch all of many similar type of disease. But each "species" has their own personality and potential treatment. There isn't a "cancer vaccine" like we had with something like smallpox.

Our medical school as a whole usually bounces around the top 25 for producing primary care physicians, and our residency is usually around top 10. Definitely a great sign to see more research come in to help with the clinical side.

~90% of cancer involves the p53 gene regulator and tellomere overactivity...but the human body adapts so quickly to changes in process that regardless of how things are effected, cancer still occurs. That's the one negative of the same genetic evolution that brought us this far.

Top ten nationally in family medicine. We have a great med school with a very good cancer center and a world class heart center/institute. But, thanks to the tar holes and their ilk in the general assembly in Raleigh we are still limited resident programs we offer.

The biggest area of impact we are focussing on is heart disease.

It'd be great to have an academics thread. There's a lot of research going on in a lot of areas. I'm sure we all have our share of accomplishments.

Hell it will be nice if the conference would push for joint research projects and push an academic partnership between all the member schools. It will help go every school and help find new treatments for many different medical issues and new discoveries in many other areas.

I've been thinking that since Saturday. I know the ACC and Ivy League do it. We'd have the marine archaeology section hooked up.

I wanted it for years in C-USA, but the leadership (lord Brit) has no vision on thing like that.

Check out the Committee on Institutional Cooperation which is associated with the Big 10.

CIC universities educate almost a half-million students which represents almost 15% of doctoral degrees, 16% of engineering Ph.D. degrees, and over 23% of the agricultural Ph.D. degrees granted in the U.S. each year.

Exactly. You have to start somewhere. And looking for a cure for cancer will definitely help you raise funds for your school to expand its research. That's why i look at this as a noble thing. 04-cheers
