OT: The Big East Football Conference that could have been...
If the Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Commissioners were all proactive and on the same page...

Green is the Southern Division, Blue is the Northern Division. Optional fill in teams are SMU, Tulsa, and Tulane.

This conference would have been making at least $11 million per year...

Alas, hindsight is 20/20

So 5 of the 8 schools in the North Division would have been taking a significant paycut?

I italicize the at least part.

And how do you measure (in dollar values) the ease of travel for teams like WVU? The existing rivalries of WVU - Pitt / Louisville - Cinc / UConn - Rutgers - Temple? What about the money saved from all the legal jargon not in play?

Threads like this remind me of the scene in "Cool Hand Luke" where George Kennedy is describing 'Lucille' and Paul Newman tells him to shut up.

I'm not saying shut up. I am saying that we've tortured ourselves with these potential scenarios for a long time, all for naught.

That would have been one helluva conference. Honestly, that had a lot of potential and could have rivaled some of the top conferences, for sure.

RE: OT: The Big East Football Conference that could have been...
I well remember the so-called "Raycom Conference" of 1990. In fact, Penn State was initially tabbed as one potential member until the Big Ten announcement was made. I don't remember anymore which team took its hypothetical "place" in this non-existent league.

The whole deal got as far as a meeting of the school presidents in April 1990 (I think the meeting was in Dallas, IIRC). But the idea of a 16-team conference just seemed too weird, too unprecedented, and too uncertain. And then Penn State joined B1G just a couple of months later, and then South Carolina and Florida State joined SEC/ACC.

Oh, what might have been.....

I wonder what could have happened if the BE football schools split after the first raid and actually showed loyality to creating a great league. Rutgers still goes to Big 10 (but with Kansas not Maryland), and PAC 16 comes to fruition.

East:
Syracuse
West Virginia
Pittsburgh
Connecticut
Cincinnati*
South Florida

West:
Louisville*
Memphis
TCU
Baylor
Iowa State
Kansas State

*= protected rivals

This would have been a pretty damn good basketball league as well....

Not a chance -- for the reasons already played out. What Aresco inherited was something he had no real control over IMO. He came way ... WAY too late to the game.

Now you're talk in'. 04-rock

That's exactly what they should have done.but either didn't have any backbone or weren't really all that crazy about being affiliated with each other for football. 07-coffee3

Should have baited Villanova for a D1 football move up after the football schools who rejected them decided to leave with the only restriction that they add 2500 tempory seats to get to the minimum 15,000 seat stadium required at that level. Where they played their games after that upgrade whether on campus, at the soccer stadium, or at Citizen's Park after the Phillies were done for the season would be their business.

Marquette, DePaul, St Johns, Providence, Georgetown, Seton Hall.

East - UConn,Temple, USF, UCF, Villanova, Navy (FB only).
West - Cinn, Memphis, Tulane, SMU, Houston, ECU (FB only to start)

BB North - C7 + UConn - double round robin + the South teams one game each.

BB South - Cinn, Memphis, USF, UCF, Temple, Tulane, Houston, SMU - double round robin + the North teams one game each.

Throw ECU a bunch of BB and Olympic games to keep them happy as Temple's replacement in the A-10.

Olympic sports - play each other once or work out equitible divisions - probably the same North South Divisions to keep the C7 schools together and happy.

Well you know this thread is really off the rails when it starts supporting a Nova move to football that was never going to happen or wanted.

Villanova is located in an affluent suburb (Radner) who made it crystal clear that they would not allow...EVER...Villanova to expand their on-campus stadium. So Villanova HAD to find an off-campus alternative.

There just isn't one that works.

I was in favor of the Villanova move-up plan. But it was tricky. The other BE-non FB school that I wished had moved up was Georgetown. They have a FCS-non-scholarship program and an obvious off-campus alternative in RFK. I think DC could have supported a major program and the Hoyas could have tapped into the Catholic high-school system for recruiting. The name-brand "Georgetown" would have been instantly eye-capturing and the academic side would have benefitted from the increased exposure.

Oh well... Would've, could've, should've... It didn't happen.

Let it go, already.
