For myself, I had no power for 6 weeks and to get home for 4 weeks took 2 hours, normally a 25 minute drive. All many of use had left was football.

This team also won the Disney Spirit Award. The video presentation at the awards ceremony really shows the power of the Pirate Nation and the love for our team.

That Miami team was stacked with talent, Clint Portis, Reggie Wayne, and Santanna Moss just to name a few.

That season helps explain the chip on the shoulder of ECU fans and Non AQ fans in general. We beat WVU, South Carolina, #9 Miami, Duke and NCST to go 9-2. We were #19 going into our Bowl game but lost to TCU and LaDanian Tomlison to drop to 9-3 and fall out of the Final Top 25 poll. We were ranked 11 out of the 16 weeks but in the end got shafted by the voters IMO. Still leaves bitter taste in my mouth about what otherwise was an incredible season of knocking off 5 AQ schools

Ms Cleo told me I was a pirate in a past life so it just fits that I root for ECU.....

Who were the other two losses to ?

Southern Miss who also went 9-3 but finished ranked #19 They had a really good team that year that went 6-0 in CUSA and won the Liberty Bowl. We had our classic ECU crap the bed loss @ a 3 win UAB team. I think the voters punished us big time for that loss but also had a hard time putting two CUSA teams in their Final Top 25 poll. ECU and Southern Miss both deserved to finish ranked that year.

Great memory and certainly a big event in our history but just that one big event in our history. The deep passion for Pirate football goes back to Leo, God rest his Pirate Soul. If you can find a copy of "Purple Pride: A History of East Carolina Football" by Coby Heath, that tells the story of our passion from the beginnings pretty well. I think it was written around '96 or so. It's a great read, I keep it prominently displayed next to the '99 version of our football helmet on my office book case. People ask me if they can thumb through it nearly every week and tell me they can't believe we have a book about our football history. Good conversation starter.

Puddle, before 1999 we truly didn't own all of ENC, after when people saw the players living the same nightmare we were we owned ALL of ENC. Before we could claim maybe half of ENC.

BTW, I have two copies of that book.

We were ranked after UAB and had moved all the way back up to 18 after beating NC. State. It was after the bowl loss to TCU that we dropped out. That was the start of TCU being what they are now. No one knew at the time though.

I'm not an overly PC guy. While I realize we are essentially named after a pretty terrible "profession" it is kind of the time heals all wounds thing. Plus most schools choose a mascot that is in some way intimidating or scary. We obviously don't support the values that Pirates held. I in no way want to be associated with the Somalian terrorists. Kind of a strange picture to have in that post. Just my 2 cents.

Plus, we have a historical connection to a specific Pirate, Edward Teach, Blackbeard, who lived in North Carolina and made it his home base.

I would have been a pirate back in the day, just not in the present. Let cannons and scurvy reign. Would've beat being in the royal navy.
