The money Troy put in the basketball arena is a good start to building up the basketball program...the next step is to build a fanbase. That will take winning, which is very possible in the "New" SBC, and it will take some 4 year players that fans can connect to and grow with.

It's obvious, at least to me, that Troy still isn't fully behind basketball by this hire, that's why I said build it for the next coach. Again to me Troy went cheap with the checkbook or they wouldn't be hiring the asst coach from a SBC school. Troy may have a great coach..I don't know. But to me they went the cheapest way possible.

At some point if Troy is serious about their basketball program..that will need to change.

That's kind of insulting to WKU. 01-wingedeagle

At any rate, playing devil's advocate, WKU until recently went with assistants as coaching hires too. And our last couple of assistants were not as seasoned and in many ways not as promising as Cunningham.

I don't think it is fair to expect Troy to throw a bunch of money after a head basketball coach before it is proven that they can sell the basketball tickets to pay for it.

I would like to note that we did up the ammount we are paying the head coach. Maestri was making $235,000 a year when he retired. Coach Cunningham was signed making $270,000. A large part of that is due to the new arena. We saw our seat licensing revenue double this year with the new arena. So I'm sure that has helped with providing a pay increase.
