RE: Big East resigns with ESPN
You know after seeing this go back and forth for months I'm doubting it's going to be this simple. I really want them to just take a freaking deal and be done but I believe they are going to decline this.

They should. That deal is sad.

ESPN matched the financial aspect, sources said. However, Big East commissioner Mike Aresco must be satisfied ESPN's deal matches NBC Sports Network's offer in all facets. Once that is concluded, the Big East presidents must approve the new deal. They could vote on accepting the deal as early as this weekend, sources said.

ESPN's package includes annually broadcasting 65 football games, 150-plus basketball games, a conference football championship game and the Big East men's basketball tournament on ESPN's family of networks, sources said.

This part is key. BE can still reject this offer if ESPN doesn't give them prime time slots like NBC offered.

Rejecting it would be dumb. What is prime time on NBCSN worth? Not so much. Even ESPNU is in more homes than NBCSN, and being in the ESPN fold means they mention your games on SportsCenter instead of pretending your league doesn't exist (see, e.g., NHL).

Resigns vs. Re-Signs

It took me a second to realize what was going on.

BE has not resigned with ESPN. Aresco is still reviewing terms and after that it has to be voted on by presidents.

I think realistically, it gets to this point and announced like it has tonight, it's probably a done deal quite frankly.

No kidding, ~500,000 vs. 3.5 million per team? Unfortunately, settling the Big East name and remaining assets might preclude them from starting in 2013 but I bet this deal might reopen thoughts of leaving in 2013.

NBCSN I think is in most houses, just no one watches. Thing you have to consider is, the ESPN family of networks includes ESPN3. You could see alot of Big East games on ESPNU and ESPN3. No way is SMU vs. Tulane football going on one of their main networks on Saturdays.

In 2014, the Big East will make as much money off of exit fees (Lou/Rut @ $10m each), as their entire football/basketball contract.

NBC screwed themselves in offering such a low amount.

Yeah but the new schools don't get any of that. So we are paying entrance/exit fees which will take 5-6 years of this contract to break even.

We all knew NBC was cheap. They are stuck with CAA and Ivy League sports. What a joke. The money ESPN is paying is like chump change to them.

if they stick around...

Of course now, I could see ESPN kind of propping the Big East up quite frankly- keeping rather cheap programming like this would be huge. Not to the level they did with the ACC but somewhat at least.

I dont know. I think this contract may actually hasten its demise. I can see it being VERY difficult to lure replacement schools from CUSA. The MW could easily poach 2 schools quite quickly. I could see Memphis, Cinci, Temple, and UConn working a C-7/MAC deal. I could see ECU and Tulane pulling the eject handle at that point and staying put. Navys certainly not coming for a couple of million a year---they make more than that off just the Army-Navy game. That would leave just UCF and USF. They get a sweetheart deal for a short stay in CUSA and wait for the the ACC gutting so they can move to the ACC.

I thought the Big East hired a TV guy as commissioner for the sole purpose of getting a sweet TV deal?
