Kent St is coming to town with their flying Senderoff
Catchy thread title? Tried to make it sounds a little like a circus...you'll see why in a bit.
2011/12: 21-12 CIT loss in 1st round
2010/11: 25-12 NIT loss in quarters
2009/10: 24-10 NIT loss 2nd round
2008/09: 19-15 CIT loss in 1st round
2007/08: 28-7 NCAA loss 1st round
2006/07: 21-11
2005/06: 25-9 NCAA loss 1st round
2004/05: 20-13 NIT loss 1st round
2003/04: 22-9 NIT loss 1st round
2002/03: 21-10 NIT loss 1st round
2001/02: 29-5 NCAA loss in Elite 8
Get the picture? How good has Kent St been in the last decade or so?
Kent St checks in at 12-10. They had a recent 4 game losing streak that culminated with a L at NIU. Considering all of their success over the years, Kent fans were not thrilled about the outcome of that game. Heck, they were 36-0 against the West until Toledo beat them in their own house this year. To put it bluntly, Kent is having an off year...yet they still have a winning record.
They are anchored by two players.
Chris Evans is a 6'8" senior forward that happens to be a freak athlete. He's good for a couple OMG plays per game. He checks in at 16.5 ppg in 32.8 minutes per game. He's gonna take plenty of shots...and he's likely going to score in double digits. He's done this every game this year except 2. He shoots 49% from the floor, which means he takes high % shots. He's also their leading rebounder at 6.9 per game and he likes to get out and run the floor. If we don't have guys getting back, he will burn us with a couple dunks. Don't be shocked if he snags a couple steals when they hedge ball screens. He is lengthy and has great athleticism.
Randall Holt is running at PG this year, even though he is best suited as a SG IMO. This is his senior year. Averages 13.9 ppg and 2.9 assists. He loves to shoot 3 pointers. In his last 13 games, he's attempted no less than 5 in a game. He maxes out at 10. He just went 5/10 against EMU, which helped Kent pick up a W. I don't know if any of you remember his game against us two years ago. He scored 11 points, went 5/10 from the field. We lost by 2 points. He and Porrini were the difference makers. We couldn't guard either of them on the perimeter. They got into the lane whenever they wanted.
Kris Brewer is their 3rd leading scorer as another guard. He's very capable IMO but can be super streaky. Might score 5 points one game...and 17 the next.
Kent is likely going to go 10 players deep. They have a very talented freshman class as well. Not sure they have anyone inside that can hurt us. Although, Melvin Tabb is a 6'9" junior that has a 20 point game at Xavier this year on his resume. Also has a 0 point game at home against Fairmont St.
When I watch Kent play I see an undisciplined team on offense. Kind of like a circus. They thrive in transition and running. Take away their transition offense and they are likely to get a little frustrated and jack some 3 pointers. To give you an idea, they've attempted 412 three pointers in 22 games. WMU has attempted 342 in 21 games
We have a decided advantage in the paint, and a decided disadvantage in athleticism on the wings and at the guard spots. I'm not convinced Kent is disciplined enough to penetrate with their guards every possession. Porrini did that for them, he took 12 shots against us two years and not one of them was a 3 pointer. They don't have anyone that disciplined on their roster this year. Let's hope they don't get hot from 3 land. The good news is they are not a good shooting team.
RE: Kent St is coming to town with their flying Senderoff
3-9 vs Kent St in Hawk's tenure.
Wins coming in the 03-04, 04-05, and 06-07 seasons.
In short, we beat them with our NCAA team, NIT team, and when Reitz was a junior and Kool was a frosh.
I believe we are 0-6 since that last win.
Good news is that the last 4 games we've played them have been barn burners.
3 point OT loss last year.
4 point tournament loss last year.
2 point loss the year before on a Porrini jumper
1 point loss at Kent on the play we shall not talk about

I really think the verdict on Senderoff is out right now. His squad was a disappointment last year...close to what WMU experienced. And this is probably the first year in well over a decade that they've lost 4 MAC games in a row.

You're welcome.
See you Wednesday!
Indeed I do.
I just didn't want to make the pain so quickly accessible...
As an aside, am I the only one that thinks of this guy when I hear the announcer speak at 0:29 in the video?
