It will most likely by Wed 2/20. They won't move the date of the BracketBuster since everyone's BracketBuster is scheduled for 2/23.

And how does this prevent any danger? If this guy is bent on harming someone he's going to do it. There are plenty of people that are out and about. If they were going to find him on campus they would have found him within an hour or two. And if tonight it isn't safe to go to class, why is tomorrow any safer if they haven't caught the guy yet? As someone who lives in the DC area and had to go through the sniper period I find this an absolutely absurd overreaction.

Um...yeah...probably not a concern. Not knocking EMU fans, but few fans of any opposing teams ever trek to Athens especially on weeknights.

Um because it keeps a large crowd out of a centralized location?

The gunman was never on campus. Nor was anybody shot. The incident happened at 9:00 AM and nothing has happened since.
It was just an armed robbery, and shutting down the entire university for 12 or more hours over an armed robbery that didn't even take place on the campus is an overreaction.
And canceling a basketball game for a few weeks harms who, exactly?
I wonder how much it cost EMU to rent a charter bus, drive down to Athens yesterday, get 15-20 hotel rooms, have (probably) 3-4 meals, all for nothing. Then they'll (probably) have to do that again in a few weeks. Hopefully the MAC/OU helps offset the costs for EMU. Hopefully not too many EMU had started to make the drive down before the cancellation was announced.
LOL...you know it's part of a bigger plan to hopefully bankrupt EMU and force them out of the MAC. It even happened when they played at Ohio! HMMMMMMMM.....wonder who could be behind this mastermind plot to bankrupt EMU with travel costs and ultimately banish them from the MAC?
(this is all sarcastic and playful...please don't think I am insincere about gun situations on campus...just making light of a situation where nobody was hurt)

Do you mean the place with security? The place where the guy would have to pass through a narrow corridor where he would easily be able to be singled out? If the guy was going to shoot people he would have shot the guy he robbed this morning.
And from all reports the bars are already packed so it hasn't prevented anything.

thanks,I didn't realize the BB games had already been scheduled, thanks for that info. 2/20 sounds like the right date then. No harm, no foul, imo

Closing the campus is also absurd since the robbery took place after classes had already started. I can understand locking down the campus for a couple of hours while the campus is searched but closing it down for the day means that the people who are safe in their classrooms are now going to go outside and possible walk into the gunman.

maybe not but it's still an incredible over-reaction. besides, a fun, easy game like this one would have been nice right before the big game on Saturday.

Well...unless you're EMU and have to make the 10 hour round trip bus ride back in 3 weeks. Or Akron, because Ohio now gets extra time off (although, I don't think Ohio can hold practice today). Tyler Tettleton tweeted he couldn't even use the weight room.

Not necessarily true. Most are played on Satruday but there are a couple games played Friday, 2/22 and some played on Sunday as well. I think Miami played on Sunday last year.

I think that was because Millett was being used for another function the day of the bracket busters.

If "gun violence" nearby is an excuse to cancel a game...how does UIC ever play a home game?

Quote:Ohio University Students Raging Balls After Campus Shutdown Due To Armed Robber, Calling It #FugitiveFest
by Bacon 24 mins ago
This morning around 9:20am a robbery occurred in Athens, Ohio. According to Ohio University’s student newspaper, The Post, the university alert system warned its students around 10:00am that an armed fugitive had robbed an apartment and fled towards campus. According to some reports the armed robber made off with $5.

By 11:37am Athens police were no longer actively searching for the suspect but had cleared the initial crime scene. At 12:05pm Vice President for Student Affairs Ryan Lombardi tweeted that Ohio University would be closed for the rest of the day.
Then things escalated.
Ohio University students, who in 2011 raged their way to the title of top party school in the nation, essentially sprinted to the bars on Court Street, which had the good sense to open early and accomodate the students, who no doubt showed up to drink away their anxiety about the still at large Five Dollar Bandit. Students not at the bars are drinking at fraternity houses and off campus residences across the town.
Goddammit I want to be in Athens right now.

I like that the amount of the robbery is a factor here. If someone had stolen $5,000, would that make a difference?

Maybe..if you had stolen $5000 instead of $5.00 wouldn't you be a little more interested in avoiding capture. Using a gun is a felony either way I suspect, but the amount of $$$ involved would probably lead to amore serious charge.
Then again, the only time I've been referenced as a DA is when Torch or some other crank calls me a "dumb***"
