Are you ready for signing day?
Get ready, there are a lot of high caliber recruits available that could still decide to become a Rocket. Lots of excitement going on right now. It seems the coaches are going to continue their tradition of providing great recruiting classes. 04-rock

After all these great recruiting classes, the time is now to win the West and the MAC Championship. It's been way too long for us not to be in the Championship game. No excuses.

Agreed. All these #1 recruiting classes are nice but until they produce championships and consistent top 25 rankings, then they really mean nothing...

RE: Are you ready for signing day?
Have we ever been consistently in the top 25? I'm not sure top of the MAC means that. If the league can follow this year well and do better in the bowl games I think top of the MAC recruiting and top 25 has a better chance of sticking.

A championship would be nice. Hoping for a run at it next year. Our corners will be more experienced, good LBs coming up and of course we're doing pretty good in the offensive skilled positions if our QB stays healthy.

I get that Toledo needs to win with the talent they have been bringing in the last few years, but Toledo has never came close to having a Top 25 recruiting class so expecting consistent top 25 rankings is confusing to me. No MAC school has brought in that kind of a recruiting class. You do see MAC schools that consistently seem to over achieve due to finding diamonds in the rough and having good young coaches.....NIU comes to mind, but no MAC school has done better than somewhere in the 50's for their recruiting class.

Not yet. Nope, not ready for signing day yet. And I hope the coaches aren't either.

This is what I posted on the premium board earlier:

I've come to the conclusion that the great teams need these 3 things in this order in order for them to be great as a whole:

1.) Great coaches
2.) A Great QB that doesn't get injured
3.) Great athletes

I feel like we already have great athletes and are continuing to bring in other great athletes. We haven't had a great QB since Bruce but we do have a good QB running the system right now. We have good coaches who are young and may develop and become great at what they do very soon but they are obviously great recruiters. I just want another Bruce, Ben, Chandler, or Jordan and Julian may be that. Also, Blackburn or Woodside may be that and I can't wait to find out.

Just my thoughts but I think we are waiting for that great QB and great coaching. The staff has been refining their skills and are probably going to be there soon. I feel they may be near the best recruiting staff in the country but maybe I'm drinking my own kool-aid. I feel that if they do bolt, the next coaching staff will be ready to run to the Championship game the minute they step on campus.

I know what you meant, but I don't think you understood what I was trying to say. If Toledo is consistently bringing in a 50-65 ranked recruiting class, why does that equate to consistent Top 25 ranked team? You're basically expecting that Toledo has some of the best coaches in the country, on a pay scale that can't compete with the schools paying the guys they believe are the best in the country, and are getting more out of the recruits after they get to campus than they should. But the fact is that while Toledo may have great coaches, they are young and will make some mistakes are are not the very best in the country because of that. As soon as someone gets to that status of showing how great they are, they will go to another school to make 4-5 times what they are making at Toledo.

In reality I think Toledo does usually get more out of their recruiting. UT is usually ranked quite below teams like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Syracuse, and of course Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State........yet on the field Toledo plays very competitive games with those teams and even beat some of them.

I like the depth of UT's recent classes. Unfortunately, UT has been very unlucky with injuries to key personnel. The injuries cost UT 2 MAC titles and some of it is due to tough OOC schedules. UT is getting better student athletes now. It's also doing a better job of getting more in-staters, which is great for growing the fan base and helps enrollment by creating more local awareness.
Alot of times I felt the Stutz regime wasn't really agressive enough and
would simply run to Florida at the end of the season to grab some talent from the All-Star games. I don't know if old staff had burned some bridges in Ohio, but the Rockets are doing a better in Ohio with real student-athletes. Much better than being the court of last resort like UT had been in the past. Staff and fans must not let expectations fall.

RE: Are you ready for signing day?
Yeah. That's where NIU has been kickin' our butt. First it was at RB, now QB too. CMU's dominance over us was basically due to QB as well. It's too darned bad we lost Boucher to MU. He went down there and basically played 2nd fiddle to Dysert; now he'll finally start as a senior. (Yeah, I know he started when Dysert was hurt.) I'll bet he would have started for at least 3 years here. Heck of a QB. What a waste.

I have mixed reactions about the emphasis on "Rocket Nation," as Beckman used to put it. Yes, we did get some good players out of Ohio, but I always had the impression his mindset was that he was recruiting for "the Mid American," so he only needed players good enough for that. I didn't sense that he was really scouring the nation for the absolute best talent he could get. Of course, I recall Stutz making some comment that kids from out West would come here and get home-sick and wouldn't stay. So, maybe there is some merit to that. But, Brian Jones and Anthony King came here and stayed. I think we did better when the net was widened out. Heck, we had some great players come out of Canada and even Europe. If Stutz caused some sour grapes with local HS coaches it was probably because those coaches don't have any more loyalty to UT than the local media does. They steer their best players to the Big Money conferences and want UT to take the players that they judge to be good enough for the MAC, then they'd get pissy of Stutz said thanks but no thanks. Then there was the big dust up over UT daring to play a football game on FRIDAY. What a joke that was, but it happened on Stutz's watch. So, if there was any ill will it was probably more the HS coach's own fault than Stutz's, but maybe there are other reasons, I don't know.

Look, I enjoy our ability to get better recruits with each season. The talent level has certainly improved over the last 5 years. Im not expecting UT to turn into a Boise St in the near future but I see no reason why within the next 5-7 years, the program wins 2-3 MAC titles and is ranked in the top 25 3-4 times during that stretch. I understand coaching stability is an issue and I don't expect Campbell to stay here much longer. But, my expectations for the program have always been that "national recognition" or respect that a Boise or TCU have earned. I hope these strong recruiting classes are pushing us in that direction.

We are only missing that one thing that always wins MAC championships and that is a good team with a great QB. We have a good team but we dont have a great QB yet. TO is good, but I dont think he is great.

Wonder how good Boise would be, and what their fan base would be like if they had 8 pro teams, OSU, ND, MSU and UM within a 2 1/2 hour driving distance?

So you're feeling we could never attain that level?

They did it with good coaching, finding the diamonds and competing with PAC 10 for players AND they have sustained it.

I mean, kudos are deserved. We have what we have.

I don't think he's saying we'll never attain that level, but it makes it a little easier to get better crowds, which means more money, which is (unfortunately) the key to college football now-a-days. People in the Boise area and in Idaho have a LOT less sports options to spend their money on.
