it's going to be a hot story with somewhere in the neighborhood of 50,000 Kentuckians coming into Nashville for the game. It's almost like the perfect storm for WKU to get noticed in the Nashville market.

Ky is the bottom of the barrel in the SEC but they are SEC and when we beat them (hopefully really bad) we have UT waiting...that will get a ton of press in Nashville.

I know 50,000 sounds like a dream and most likely wouldn't be close to that if uk hadn't hired a new coach. But with both school having new coaches and coming off the WKU win over uk this past year sets up the perfect storm for fans...it's also the first game of the season and on a Saturday.

So 50,000 isn't that much of a dream at all. When we beat uk in Nashville we have another part of the perfect storm (for the Nashville media) waiting in UT. A win over uk and then UT sets up WKU to take advantage of the Nashville market for the rest of the season....

Of course losing kills any hope of that but even a muts fan should be able to see it as a very good possibility of WKU getting a ton of press in Nashville this coming season.

You can capture your own alumni that live there but that's all. You can have a game there and get Kentuckians to cross the border and attend...but why would Tennessee natives give a flying squat about WKU?

It's the exact same situation with Arkansas State in the Memphis market. We can capture our own alumni base who live and work in the city and we can capture the West Memphis area....but we are not going to get much traction in a Tennessee town itself with Tennessee natives.

WKU can make runs at sports fans in all of western Kentucky. Arkansas State can make a run at sports fans in the State of Arkansas. But to think that we can really make a dent outside of our own States is really just wishful thinking.

One huge difference WKU use to be the lead story on channel 5 sports most night when WKU had a basketball game. It's been a while but so has the winning at a level that gets that attention.

Also a large section of southern Ky is in the Nashville TV market with the main TV station coming out of Nashville. Unless that's changed over the last 10 years or so.

One factor that's changed over the last 10 to 20 years...PRO SPORTS entered Nashville and with that a change in the viewers. Now Nashville is mostly a pro sports town.

Both the muts and WKU are looking at scrapes when it comes to Nashville and that's not going to change over night. If a hot story comes up at either of the schools...Nashville will cover it but once it dies down it's back to scrapes.

Only one thing will change that WINNING and winning big. That's goes for the MUTS or WKU and not just one season but a run. If either WKU or the muts can fill the void of the Nashville area needing a winner. Either school can fill it but to keep it it will take consistent winning at a national level.

Right now both schools are just getting the hot stories or a feel good story. Nothing from either school to brag about...at this point.

But come Sept and the day of the uk vs WKU game you will see as much or more Nashville TV and print coverage than the muts will see in a month or two. BANK ON IT.

As long as we're clear that no actual Tennesseans are going to care squat about WKU unless they are alums then I'm good with your comment.

I wouldn't say no actual Tennesseans because winning will bring in some of those if there's a void that needs filling just like the Titans filling a void in southern Ky. It won't be overnight but winning at a national level will cross borders especially when you're only 45 minutes away.

You need to concentrate on Western Kentucky and your alumni base wherever they are.

But it is a fool's errand to go for casual out-of-state fans even if you are winning at a high level. It really doesn't work that way.

I agree it's not very likely for WKU to get tons of new lifetime fans from Nashville and that wasn't really what I was talking about. That time is long gone.

I'm talking more of a "name" that fans recognizes as a "common name" type because today with no borders (internet) and 100s of games on each month it's hard to even build a local fanbase much less from another state.

Not sure but it was definitely a message board guy because he mentioned "100 miles of hate" which only exists on the boards. WKU will get coverage when they play UT but so did Troy. It's just funny that WKU thinks that they are anything other than an extra milling around in the background. We covered this pretty thoroughly here:

So the game that drew a hair under 25k in 2011 is going to draw 50k two years later because Kentucky hired Bob Stoop's brother?

Give me a break. If the game draws 40k I'll be mildly impressed. Army and Navy have zero to do with this game and UT fans aren't going to give a crap about this game, they may be playing Austin Peay the same week, but it's their season opener. They aren't going to scout WKU based off of this game.

I won't deny that you guys may get more coverage for this game than we will for any individual game, but more than we'll get "in a month or two"...this is the definition of myopia. You'll get at best a decent print preview, a short television preview, a decent print recap and a short television recap. If you think we can't get two print stories and two television stories in eight weeks...I don't know what to tell you.

Nowhere did I say anything about the number of "stories" the muts will get...front page coverage is worth a lot more than a generic paragraph on page 3 of the sports section by a beat writer.

You really don't know much do you? A Thursday night game that starts at 8:30 that draws 24,500 could easily be doubled with it being on a Saturday and the fact we beat them this past season and both schools having new coaches....

Most of the time "new" equals excitement and renewed hope for a fanbase add in the fact WKU won on uk's home field and the revenge factor to the game being on a day when fans can travel and not miss work...adds up to a lot more uk fans.

BP's first game at WKU and coming off a bowl season WKU will bring more than half of the 50k on a Saturday evening.

Army and Navy have a lot to do with WKU's season...both winnable games and winning means press and a fighting chance to enter SBC play with a 4-0 record and the zoo of BP means even more press. UT fans don't have ANYTHING to do with this other than we play their team. This is about things setting up perfect for WKU (if we win) to get tons of press in Nashville and even national.

Like I said even a muts fan should be able to get that but maybe I'm giving you too much credit for having common sense?

Also recognize that MT and WKU (more so WKU) are fighting for scraps in that market.

To clarify Doug's comment. They aren't asking about WKU, they're asking about Petrino. When you hire a story, you're going to get people interested in the story. They aren't interested in WKU, but maybe they will be.

I'm also interested in what you're hearing about WKU in Nashville, while you're in Dallas.

Well spoken ...kinda. After the people asked about the new WKU hire, we continued to talk football and hoops. It's silly to say that WKU has the same level of following that mt does in the Nashville area, but WKU is trying to get there're share.

Let's revisit this thread when the attendance for this game is closer to 40k than it is 50k, shall we?

This is like mine, just because its called a yacht does not mean its a 100 million dollar boat like tiger woods has, but its not considered a regular run about boat neither

RE: WKU - Nashville
The Nashville Metropolitan Area and media market is clearly defined. WKU is no more relevant in Nashville than UAB. Wishful thinking aside, WKU's core market will always be north of Bowling Green. WKUs target markets have to be Lexington and Louisville to build relevance, just as MT has to target Nashville because we are the state university of Middle Tennessee and Murfreesboro is a commuter suburb of the Nashville job market.
------------
The Office of Management and Budget defines the Nashville metro area as the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin TN Metropolitan Statistical Area, a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) designated for statistical use by the United States Census Bureau and other agencies. The area is the 38th largest MSA in the United States.

Anchor City: Nashville

Principal cities in the Nashville metro area include:
Murfreesboro
Franklin
Hendersonville
