Yeah, just don't touch anything or breathe and you probably won't catch it. 05-nono

So ditto on it being a different strain.

When you get the flu shot, your body's reaction to it temporarily puts a strain (no pun intended) on your immune system, leaving you more susceptible to other illnesses with flu-like symptoms. So it might not literally be another strain of the flu. Thanks, NPR!

I dunno. Do you get paid sick leave?

In order to have time to mass produce the vaccine and have it on hand in Aug-Sept, the manufacturers have to project what strains of the flu will be most prevalent well in advance. If the current widespread virus was not one they anticipated, it might not even be in the vaccine.

My little girl tested positive for type A on thursday. She had the nasal spray vax the end of October. To top it off, my wife is pregnant and now is going on tamiflu as prevention since she didn't get the vax yet(was waiting until 12 weeks-now is 15wks). I had mine and seem to be holding my own.

Good luck, and God bless you and your family. I pray your pregnant wife stays healthy and avoids the flu.

Of the peds patients we've tested this week, about two out of three are positive.

A good thread for which I can personally vouch.

Existing among certain unnamed germ factories I can certainly say that there has indeed been a reported disturbance in the force.

Time to revert to what your grandma told you long ago. Clean yourself, wash yourself, and don't touch anything without a tissue.

Paying $36 for a shot and STILL miss a week of work.

I will never spend a dime on another flu shot as they are 2 for 2 with me...I've had the flu twice since I moved to Alabama in middle school...each time I got a flu shot.

The real solution is to wash those hands, avoid stress, eat well, and get plenty of sleep.

I have read that the consumption of fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi also aids in the prevention of the flu and other illnesses.

Your best bet (beyond a flu shot) is to be, generally speaking, clean and healthy.

The flu is an ass-kicker, and there's a reason it hits the very old and the very young the hardest. They're the most physically vulnerable.

I'll remember you in my prayers, UB. stuff like this around little smedleys and pregnant women is no joke.

Thanks Smaug. You're a class act.

Btw, for those keeping score, my daughter(2.5yrs) has had vax for pneumonia and the flu. Got both of them. Had pneumonia in June and now the flu. Her pediatrician is more of a "naturalist" and offers the vax but doesn't push them. We got them and she is up to date on all but it kinda makes you wonder.

I don't know how it is in Georgia, but here your child has to have up to date vaccinations to be admitted to public school. People who refuse childhood vaccinations because some moron spews blather about vaccination causing autism, etc, give me the red ass. Where did Jenny McCarthy get her medical degree? I don't know what to think about a doctor who "doesn't push" vaccination.

There has been an outbreak of whooping cough in Oregon/Washington because of inadequate childhood vacs. Boggles my mind. Those shots are cheap, easy insurance. People who don't get their kids shots and depend on the surrounding population being immune to protect them are idiots, but it is their child who'll pay for their idiocy.

Not an attack on you, UB. That issue just presses a hot button for me.

RE: SBR - Wash your hands
No offense taken. I agree with you for the most part but I do wonder about the effectiveness when she contracts the very thing she has been vaxed for. I in no way believe the "McCarthy" view and when I say her Dr doesn't push it, its just that, he offers the pros and cons and makes it the parents decision( which I don't always agree with-I mean, what are we paying him for?).
But like I said, she is up to date on all and it is pretty much the same here in Ga but I think you can sign a waiver.
Anyway, I know the vax for the serious disease stuff is necessary but some others I wonder about. Can we get vax for EVERYTHING? I just don't know. I mean I had chickenpox and never got flu vax until my late 20s. Same for lots of us. Just wondering.
I never thought about until she came along and now it's like everything, I have to look at all the decisions I make for her from every angle and pray I am making the best one.
I am rambling.
She seems to be doing ok with the flu now so maybe it'll be a "light" case. We are on day 4.

RE: SBR - Wash your hands
As I said above, flu vacs are a bit different as they are manufactured in advance, including the strains projected to be most prevalent. Even if it includes the right virus, it is not an ironclad protection from flu so much as an edge against being infected. It helps the resulting case be a bit milder than it would be otherwise.

Put it this way - I work family practice. I know I will be routinely and repeatedly exposed. I get the shot every year as a result. Can't hurt, might help, you know?
