Topper Fans Visit Lafayette
SBC fans, get your butt to Lafayette, LA before you die to watch your team play UL!

Call me sheltered, but I've traveled to 9 countries, 32 states, and 3 continents, and I had one of the best time (if not the best) in Lafayette.

The second Beed, CajunBrad, & I landed, the Cajun hospitality reared it's "pretty" head! As we waited for our fourth wheel to meet us from Slidell, we stayed close to the hotel sippin on cold ones & "water". Prior to dinner, Beed & I were greeted by the SBCbbs' most famous poster, Zeebart. I've been on this and the other board under a few alias', and have followed for nearly 15 years. Zee brings it with every single post. I watched he & Beed argue in 1998 that our IAA team would kick ULaLa's azz. We lost. I watched he & Beed argue every year for 9 years of Michael Southall's career. They both brought it. Nearly to the point that one of them may have been "removed" from a board for badgering the other! That ended Friday night as the two finally met.

Now, back to the evening. So, we embark to Blue Dog upon Zee's recommendation. He actually said Prejean's, but CajunBrad was scared to go!!! Zee wouldn't lead us in the wrong direction! We walked in & the hostess said 90 minute wait. Beed slipped her some cash & we went straight to a table. That's how Beed rolls; even in Cajun land. I could only sit back & watch. Of all the menu items, one thing kept grabbing my eye - the grilled duck entree. I've never had duck prepared any better than my own, until Friday night. Best damn duck I've ever had.

After listening to a little blues, lots of pics with Beed's new "friend" who's wife was 'out of town', they asked us to leave as they were ready to close. But, they told us about a little "Corner Bar" that we thought we'd try. As we exit the van, Beed decides to go quietly into the night at the LFT Hilton. CajunBrad, SlidellMAC, and myself proceed into the bar. We meet some new friends, but continue to build our foundation for game day.

4 hours later, it's time for breakfast at T Coons. Don't miss this place on your visit. Nice Lafayette servers, wholesome food, homemade grits (which I hadn't had since my South Georgia grandmother passed away in 1998), but no bloody mary's. I needed one - bad. The server went into a 30 second infomercial that it was too early for alcohol & that you couldn't find that stuff here. We later saw her at the aforementioned Corner Bar!!!

So, back to the Hotel bar for a bloody mary. The day was set. 'Ol Blue took us via cab to the game; except SlidellMAC as he was gonna meet up with us at 2. Still needed to recover from Friday.

He drops us off at the gate. No food or drinks. Just our WKU garb & bermuda shorts. No problem! We visited approximately 71 tailgates & got 2 beers from each one per person; but none better than Zee's. Fresh gumbo, steamed rice, beer, and Scotch whisky. We talked to all the Cajun fans at Zee's (subjects included football, goats, naked clubs, guns, aluminum shampoo, basketball, Harold Arcenaux, Pike initiation, tailgating, bowl bids, goats again, boudin (boo-dahn), beer, Robert Lee, Michael Southall (thought Zee & Beed were going to come to blows again), Jesse Evans, the town of Lafayette, and WKU football freefall; in that order).

Then the game started. Saw CajunJack (the most interesting Cajun fan in the world) at halftime as we ventured up from the WKU sidelines to the beer line & he wanted a pic with us. Then the game ended (without replay!!!!). While on sidelines, we were verbally assaulted nearly 2,221 times by the UL student section. I think they liked Beed's legs!

Back to the Corner Bar for a nightcap! There, we ran into some of the students that recognized us! They apologized profusely for their antics at the game. Told them they shoulda been ashamed of themselves! All of them said they were; they just kinda get jacked up for games. Love it!

All in all, great trip! Can't wait for 2015.

RE: Topper Fans Visit Lafayette
just now seeing this myself zee.

almost everything 01 says did happen. but what happens in lafayette is 'supposed' to stay in lafayette.

i'm a son of the south. when i was in the marine corps i had a lot of northern friends. i know this is shocking but something about the way northerners relentlessly busted each others chops to the point of invoking mothers into it amused me. i'm sure it shaped my scot-irish blood in a negative way.

fortunately the sand roads of flarda and burr rock clay of the commonwealth of ky is my base. i love southern hospitality. you won't find it better than in lafayette.

we were welcomed like family. every group we passed at tailgating spoke kindly to us.

john grisham couldn't come up with a character like cajunpilotjack. or his brother kelly who yielded the spotlight to his older brother. but not before he regaled us with his 'hawpoon' dance all the while manning the boudain on the grill.

zee's tailgate is a family affair. and i don't mean his son and wife and daugher....who we all met. you can see his whole crew is an extended family. and to me that's what this whole trip was about. i'd loved to had a better season coming in but on this trip the football was secondary.

it was about meeting good folks. spending time with my bud 01. meeting his 2 friends...cajunbrad and charlie runkle from slidell.

i know us guys that made the trip and the ones that welcomed and hosted us have turned this into a message board version of tummy sticks but it was that good of a time.

sunbelt fans.....if you make one trip....make it to lafayette!

Lafayette is one of the most wonderful places in this world. I had the privilege to live there for seven years. Four years in school and three working. I remember one day in my apartment near the campus I heard this wonderful music playing so I decided to follow it. When I got to Gerard Park I realized Festival Acadians was going on and the band I had heard was Beausoleil. I've been a fan on them ever since. Living there I also discovered a wonderful festival like no other I'd seen before. Festival International is a wonderful fusion of other French speaking countries around the world. The people, the culture and the city I believe have left with me an unbreakable love for Acadiana. People in New Orleans rave about Jazz Fest but for me it is no comparison to Festival International.

The food is like none other in this world. I've lived in New Orleans since 1993 and NOLA has some good food no doubt about that. However, Lafayette has less high brow offerings that NOLA just can't match. Every time I go to Lafayette I come with an ice chest and fill it with boudin and stuffed boneless chickens. I know of several people in NOLA that do the same. If I could I would move back to Lafayette in a heartbeat.

So Sunbelt fans come on down. If I was a fan from another state I would plan on spending a few days in NOLA and a few days in Lafayette. Heck look up the festivals and come down for a vacation. You will have one of the best times of your life.

RE: Topper Fans Visit Lafayette
The only time I've made the trip to Lafayette was for the conference basketball tournament in 2007, which at the time I only posted on the Blue Raider board, so I didn't know any of the Cajun fans, but I did have an awesome time down there. Of all the schools that have visited the Boro over the years for football, the only ones to ever bring a tailgate worth a damn were the Cajuns, one year I got fed really well at a Cajun tailgate in Murfreesboro. I definitely look forward to the opportunity to meet zeebart(and dahbeed) someday, I haven't met any posters from this board face to face before and would welcome any of you to my tailgate in Murfreesboro and know many of you would extend the same courtesy to me at your place, but as if zeebart and dahbeed's online personas weren't enough to make you want to meet them before a game, the stories told about them from those who know them are even better.

Happy Thanksgiving to zeebart and dahbeed:

meeting other fans dials down the animosity. when we were in mobile for sbc hoops tourney we met the tasty greek and his crew. i consider him a friend to this day. i'll miss his hoops knowledge when unt leaves.

i've known arkstfan since the early 90's but finally met him in jonesboro this year.

i'll be sure to look you and kajunraider up the next time i'm in the boro.

ps. happy thanksgiving to all.

I'm sure everyone mention in this topic are good people but I can't say the same for the rest of the ULL fans or at least the loud mouth no class ******** sitting in section J.

There's nothing sadder than a couple of mid 30-40 year old trying to trash talk a female fan (the mother of a WKU player) as she walked by or making stupid ass comments about a player when they are laying on the field hurt. The group sitting behind us might not be the typical ULL fan but fans like that is what's remembered. When Quanterus Smith was laying on the field in what ended up being a season ending injury there was a group of ULL fans behind us saying I hope he broke his F'ing neck.

They are lucky Quanterus's family wasn't there because a war would have broke out and I've sit with his family at a couple games and there are some big boys in his family and in mine and Antonio Andrews (wku rb that put up 200+ yards) dad was there also and he's looks like he could step in and be a replacement for his son. It wouldn't have took much for them to get a good old ass kicking that they deserved.

And what the hell is up with ALL the ull fans getting a chant going when a WKU player is on the sidelines hurt? I know all of you were jacked up coming off that last stop but hell at least wait till the injured player gets up and walks off before starting a chant. I've never seen fans like that before because in every stadium I visited no matter what's the score or what point in the game or how important it is....THEY ALWAYS show respect for the injured player by being quiet till the player gets to his feet....not ull fans

So as a whole the ull fanbase was the most disrespectful fans I've seen in the SBC. Like I said I'm 100% sure the folks Beed and his crew met were very good people but I had a very different experience once I was at the game. Up till then...very friendly people and over all I had a very good impression of the city and the people of Lafayette and overall had a great 4 days...2.5 in New Orleans and 1.5 in Lafayette.

That is surprising and not typical at all of the people from Acadiana or from most other places. It just takes a few to ruin your trip. You were just around some A__holes. They were probably drunk because we do serve beer at the games. I've had some bad fans ruin my fun also so I know it can happen anyplace. If you like putting your life on the line go to an LSU game dressed in your teams gear. You will be tortured with "Tiger Bait" from every drunk that you pass by and some will get in your face and threaten you.

Sometimes it can be a difference of culture and personality clashes. I was at the Sunbelt basketball trourny many years ago at Lake Front Arena in New Orleans. I told some WKU fans I liked their colors (Red and White are also UL colors) but they were pulling for the wrong team. I was just joking but they got really PO!
I left them with that. I didn't mean to tick them off but to start a friendly conversation.

******** in every corner, my friend. I apologize for UL fans everywhere. There was NO ONE in my vicinity of the stadium offering anything but well wishes to your ball player..

Happy Thanksgiving.

******** in every corner, my friend. I apologize for UL fans everywhere. There was NO ONE in my vicinity of the stadium offering anything but well wishes to your ball player..

Happy Thanksgiving.

Z

Always seems to be a few at every venue, but overall Cajun fans give as good as they get.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

RE: Topper Fans Visit Lafayette
