I think across the board c-usa has the advantage. They still have better overall athletic programs, larger budgets, better attendance and they're at least marginally better in nearly every sport with the exception of football. We clearly had the better season in football, but if you think its a given we're going to just keep getting better in football and they're going to keep getting worse, you're nuts. I think over the next ten years we'll battle back and forth in who has the better season. If we really want to be the better conference we need to be patient and let our on field gains in football translate to other sports and other factors over time. Football of course is the great equalizer, we need to be realistic and realize that c-usa will not stay this bad in football, but so long as we don't take big steps backward we'll see the success in football trickle down where everything else(perception, budgets, attendance in all sports etc.) will improve as well.
C-USA is not going to lay down and die, they aren't "dead on arrival", but with hard work and commitment from all members we can make sure that this season's success in football is not an anomaly and eventually we could legitimately have the better conference in nearly every aspect(don't see us passing them in academics or endowments).
respect. The Sun Belt has had a great growth year in football (similar to C-USA's last year) and is no longer considered a 'glorified' FCS league and will begin to compete for better and better bowls going forward.
That said, there really is no comparison between the markets which C-USA brings and that of the Sun Belt, and after all, this is really the only static variable when it comes to conference strength. Every year teams will rise and fall but there is no getting around the market you're in (except maybe if you're a La Tech or a Boise St). It's hard to compete against 60,000 students and a top-20 tv market.
