MBB: Fear the Walls of Troy
I'd say if Troy can keep these kind of crowds coming, we will have a true home court advantage in basketball. The amazing arena helps.

If the USA game doesn't interfere with my school I may try to make it.

Well now the visit will be a pleasure for you. The new arena is worth the price of admission just to sit in. It's the nicest basketball arena in the South. 03-thumbsup

I believe stAte has only sold out the Convo twice. The night it opened vs. Memphis State, and the Women's NIT vs. the Hogs.

Sadly, it is way too big for our needs at this point.

Is it just me, or is NCAA basketball declining in popularity?

Too true, I wouldn't have believed a season-opening crowd of 5,806 a few short years ago. For comparison, our season opener in 2009 had 2,400. I expect our men's basketball average could be 8,000 this year. If we beat #10 Florida, we should have a huge crowd for our next home game against Texas Southern (I'll be in town for that one!!).

Avg BB Attendance Trends for a few Sun Belt Schools

Troy is really the only school trending up over the last 25 years.

Considering increase in population and enrollment of these schools - I'd say going to college basketball games isn't as popular as it used to be.

Does that chart include the 2011-2012 season? I was thinking MT averaged around 5k last year.

There was 5,329 for 17 home games, last regular season home stand (3 games) averaged 7,164. The last home game (a quarterfinal loss to Minnesota) there 10,521 fans in Murphy Center.

The increase in attendance last season from the previous season was the 6th largest increase in attendance nationally.

Yeah - I got the numbers here: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/publ...index.html

I mistakenly assumed 2012 referred to attendance so far this year, so I omitted it. So those numbers are season ending in 2011, 2010, etc. and do not include last season.

Obviously when teams do as well as Middle did last year, attendance typically spikes up.

Do/did you guys have many big-name non-conference games at home? Seems like stAte can't schedule anyone to generate any excitement.

We didn't really play any "huge" name teams, but we played Belmont twice and had 6,000 for one game and 7,000 for the other. Our final home game was against Minnesota and we had about 10,500 for that one. We play UAB and Mississippi here this year. I expect we'll have great crowds for those games. And if we beat SSU and Florida, we should have a rather large crowd for our next home game against Texas Southern, perhaps another 10,000 or so.

Is it just me or is it comical for us to "fear" Troy after one game in their new arena with one good crowd against a Mississippi State team that got taken to the wire against William Carey?

yes. Don't hold what 1 over zelous Troy fan says against the rest of the Troy fans on here- or atleast the ones that don't look through the cardinal colored glasses.

It was a great win for our program. Especially against an SEC team, especially on the opening night of our new arena.

But we are FAR from our 2010 team. At least at this point.
