The breathtaking synchronization of snares has us peeling ourselves off the floor in awe.

Perhaps. But I do remember just two years ago when Troy's PEP BAND came into your house leaving your fans angry because they couldn't hear your full band over the Troy pep band.

Have fun with that #1 drumline.

Sorry, but five white dudes on snares is not the best "drumline" in the country.

You get 2:00 for posting an idiotic Bleacher Report ranking as significant.

Right, playing loud is what determines a bands quality.

Marching 110, Ohio University. One heck of a show (Non-HBCU)
Tennessee State - Amazing show.
FAMU was phenomenal and will be again once they're allowed to march.

Apparently according to your fan base and their reaction...yes. And don't bring that argument at me. You know as well I do that Troy's band is more than just a loud playing ensemble. And I'm a music educator that teaches band so yes I'm qualified to make an appropriate assessment.

In Ohio one very large and well liked band is the marching band in Hudson Ohio. Their moniker is "Loud is Good". Personally I do not care for it at all as a style but I will say that the community over there love it and put signs up everywhere with that saying on it all over town.

The execution was great and it was a solid performance, but it was a glorified snare solo. No solo of any musical instrument should last as long as 6 minutes.

Typical snare solos (at a time) are around 15 seconds during a DCI show.

tl;dr: Too much snare.

To the Sound of the South

a 30 person cymbal line is cool and all, however some of those members could be handed mallets and change your sound completely for the better.

Not to start a flame war or anything. the SOS is loud, but that's all they've got.

Now I'm going to go 05-hide and wait on my rep points to go down.

You're right about the lack of mallet instruments. As an alumni of the band program at Troy, it was quite the surprise last season when we saw that the pit disappeared. Not sure the reasoning behind that and there are some alumni that weren't pleased about that.

Now to say that the SOTS only has "loud," well I'm calling bull on that. That band also has some great chops too. Did you not hear the syncopation and complexity in the latin jazz music last week? And to get that many people to play it together? That's chops. So don't say "loud" is all they got because you know it's not true.

you can't stop the tuba players......you can only hope to contain them!!!

we need to add a 'tuba player insiders' thread pinned at the top so they can talk trash about who is the best piccolo player and such.

I don't ever remember you guys having decent a front ensemble. Maybe 1 or 2 players at the most. I've only seen your band at the UAB Troy games (home and away) and last week it started with a monsoon so I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to either band. I've just never been impressed with the SOS... To each their own though.

I hope that you guys do take away some cymbals and add some front ensemble. It would help dramatically. You guys are a college band, the lack of front ensemble disturbs me too.

I'm gonna back off the loud thing, just because I don't want to start a flame war. here have a beer 04-cheers

Prior to last season we had a fairly large pit percussion section.
