MAC Football!
Minutemen set sturdy foundation

UMass athletic director John McCutcheon had a smile while standing underneath the Gillette Stadium stands and it had nothing to do with any holiday purchase on Black Friday.

McCutcheon was eager to extol the long strides the UMass football program took in its transition year into FBS status as a new member of the Mid-American Conference.

“I think it was a great experience for us. We learned a lot. Obviously, you’d like to win more than we did but that, I don’t think, was to be unexpected in terms of wins and losses,” McCutcheon said. “I think we saw some great development of the team. We hung in there in a couple of the games. We got our first win, which was very positive.”

There is a motion that will be presented by the fac senate today to call on admin to consider reversing decision to move football to FBS

Hustle Belt @HustleBelt
The UMass faculty wants to discuss a proposal to move football back to FCS. To be a fly on the wall of that meeting.

AMHERST — If you thought the debate on the University of Massachusetts campus about the upgrade of the football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) was over once the team took the field, think again.

While the majority of the discussion among fans is driven by the consequences of moving home games to Gillette Stadium, it’s the financial commitment of the university that has some members of the Faculty Senate’s Ad Hoc Committee on FBS Football raising concerns.

The committee, co-chaired by Max Page of the department of art, architecture and history and Nelson Lacey of the Isenberg School of Management, will present an interim report at Tuesday afternoon’s regularly scheduled meeting of the Faculty Senate.

“What we’ve tried to do is simply look as objectively as we can at the costs, present them, and then let people debate what they think the meaning of that is,” Page said. “You could look at this report that Nelson and I wrote at the committee and say, ‘Great, that’s the kind of investment we need.’ Others can say, ‘Whoa, this is way too much money.’”

The University of Massachusetts faculty voiced their opinion on the large budget spent on their football team, which didn't draw many fans in 2012. While they have a point, it doesn't appear to change their MAC affiliation any time soon.

The fact that they're playing all home games 100 miles from campus is a pretty strange idea, and even though they can bus students from one side of Massachusetts to the other, rather crippled the on-campus tradition of rolling out of bed on a Saturday, walking across the quad and going to the game. I think they should have been able to play their games at McGuirk Stadium, but apparently the facilities were not FBS-worthy, which is why they're spending millions on bringing them up to snuff. They can play games as UMass again in 2014, but not all of them.

UMass football gets its man in running back Lorenzo Woodley
[Image: lorenzo-woodley-1ed-XoFan.jpg]

Running back Lorenzo Woodley, a recruit out of Miami's Christopher Columbus High School, became the crown jewel of Molnar's 2013 recruiting class, announcing Thursday that he had chosen the Minutemen.

The 6-foot, 210-pound Woodley racked up 1,086 yards and 24 touchdowns on 171 carries for the Class 8-A semifinalist Explorers, who had players sign with Florida State, Indiana and Florida International on Wednesday

Martin Jacobson donates $2.5 million for naming rights to UMass Football Press and Skybox Complex at McGuirk Stadium
[Image: 12909986-mmmain.jpg]

Martin (Marty) Jacobson committed $2.5 million to the university Monday afternoon in a ceremony featuring UMass Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy, Athletics Director John McCutcheon and head football coach Charley Molnar.

Martin Jacobson, a 1968 graduate of UMass, said the chance to make an impact following the university’s transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision was the impetus behind the gift.

Pass/Fail: A look at college sports academic rankings;
UMass football could be in trouble

According to the Post-Standard, "A minimum four-year average score of 900, or 930 over the most recent two years, is required for postseason participation. The minimum required APR scores will increase to 930 over four years or 940 over two years, starting with the 2014-15 postseason."

According to the database, UMass football currently has an APR of 935, which could lead to punishment under the heightened standards that will be in place in a couple year. Under the current regulations, UMass meets all the requirements. However, should the program's four-year APR fail to rise about that 940 mark, there could be some action by the NCAA down the road.

Anthony Dima Named To 2013 Outland Trophy Watch List

One of UMass football's top returning linemen, fifth-year senior Anthony Dima has been named to the 2013 Outland Trophy Award Preseason Watch List as announced on Thursday by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The award is given annually to college football's top interior lineman (offensive & defensive lines). Dima is one of 25 offensive tackles named to the watch list.

Dima is one of three players from the Mid-American Conference to be named to the Outland Trophy Watch List. Toledo center Zac Kerin and Kent State defensive tackle Roosevelt Nix were also members of the watch list.

The 6-foot-7, 302 pound native of Centereach, N.Y., was named earlier to Phil Steele's Preseason All Mid-American Conference Team this summer.

The versatile lineman enters 2013 as a two-year starter after transferring to UMass from Hofstra following his true freshman year where he redshirted with the Pride. He will be charged this year with leading a mostly young offensive line which lost three starters from last year in Stephan Milhim, Quinton Sales, and Nick Speller.

All told, Dima has played in 23 career games making 20 starts. He missed the first two games of 2012 due to a preseason injury, but returned to play in every remaining game of the season but one.
