The Southeastern Conference took an official stance on a proposed four-team playoff Friday when school presidents and athletic directors voted unanimously to support having the four best teams play for the national title.

So, what happens if the B1G, BEast, MWC, CUSA, and one of ACC/BIG-12/PAC-12 vote against the "Top 4 Teams?"

CUSA, MAC, and most other smaller conferences can (and likely will) be bought off with promises of higher financial returns in exchange for their vote.

Not necessarily by the SEC though.

I think Silve proposed, or commented that he was okay with, an 8-team format. (For exactly the reason you mention.)

He never proposed it. I don't know if he said he was ok with it, but UGA President Adams proposed an 8 team playoff in 2008 and said Slive was livid.
