WTH UT-Arlington....
...seriously, why does the SBC need markets? It's not going to get them any more TV money. I have lived in Dallas for 4 months now and have never heard UNT mentioned on TV or radio (except the night WKU beat them in SBC championship game). I listen to a lot of sports talk radio and there is no talk whatsoever. I know for sure UT-Arlington is pretty much about 50th on the Dallas sports market list.
I like the TxSt add, but why not go after a decent FCS program like App St. I would rather have Charlotte as football only to offset UALR. I would rather have Jax St. than UT-A....
Unfortunately, Benson is bringing all of his WAC baggage with him....pathetic he can't up his expectations just a little.

As I said in another thread, if NMST gets in the Sunbelt then Benson is doing a better job as WAC commissioner now than he was before he left.

I don't mind NMSU as a football only to offset UALR.
UT-Arlington is about as low hanging fruit as you can get....

So we "save" NMSU again, and they leave their good hoops program in another conference, and bring their consistently sh*tty football program to the Belt ?

Arlington keeps the league in Dallas. They have a brand new arena, large student body 30k, emerging research institution, and they were discussing adding Football as part of their admission to the WAC

Well...with this, and if you believe the NMSU rumor, your basketball/Olympic Sports divisions could look like this:
EAST
- Georgia State
- Florida Atlantic
- Western Kentucky
- Middle Tennessee
- Troy
- South Alabama
- App. State/Charlotte/Georgia Southern
WEST
- Arkansas State
- Arkansas-Little Rock
- Louisiana-Monroe
- Louisiana-Lafayette
- Texas State
- Texas-Arlington
- New Mexico State
Football, could be:

- Western Kentucky
- Middle Tennessee
- Troy
- App. State/Charlotte/Georgia Southern
WEST
- South Alabama
- Arkansas State
- Louisiana-Monroe
- Louisiana-Lafayette

Why? Hopefully, they're just coming over for basketball. We don't want their football program until 2020.

RE: WTH UT-Arlington....
I am not seeing this as a good add. What I can say is: they have a new arena, are in a better position in DFW than UNT, wont likely leave before getting to FBS, have a huge enrollment, and we wont have another upgrade right now and we'll have time to digest a bit. I'm really not in love with this but the presidents have spoken it seems.
This would appear to close off that possibility of the WAC surviving and providing a lifeline to FCS schools to upgrade en masse.
Im glad to have Texas State.
I hope we're done for now.

UTA makes sense. It gives TXST a travel partner, adds a good academic school, keeps us on the sportscasts for at least two seconds in the Metroplex for a few months, and they are not a bad basketball program, at least in comparison. It doesn't affect football at all so I'm not sure what the big deal is.
NMSU is a different matter entirely.

All sports or no sports. They can take all of their money and put it toward the other sports.
Equal playing field.
If MT didn't play football, I guess we'd have a shiny new arena, too.

I live in Dallas...the only college teams that have any market share are Texas, A&M and maybe SMU. UNT gets no press now and won't in CUSA because its a pro sports town + UT and A&M.
Why does the SBC need to keep the Dallas market. No extra $$$ will come because of Dallas. The SBC needs good programs more than large markets.
This same thinking is about to water down CUSA...

The argument for markets is driven by the networks. If the SBC can secure 5% of the viewership of the 2m households in the metroplex, it will have secured around 100,000 television sets. Name another metro area in the SBC where a similar argument can be made. This is why it was important to get back into the market. There is a reason why all of the other conferences wanted into that area...why should th SBC be immune to that?

Which is why adding Ga Southern and App State which are traditional football powers with great tradition and fan support could help elevate the Sun Belt above the CUSA in terms of RPI. The state of Georgia had 165 athletes sign FBS scholarships and UGA and Tech only signed 35. Ga Southern will be loaded with talent as an FBS team, and having two Georgia teams in the Sun Belt will give the conference more press in GA which will improve recruiting for the rest of the SB in GA. There is plenty of talent to go around for everyone. The CUSA does not have a team in GA which will hurt their recruiting here. Great opportunity for the SB and I think Benson sees it.

What the SunBelt needs to do is try and lure ECU over. UT-A would suck for all sport invite.
