Does ECU have financial issues that I'm unaware of? Why do their fans seem so damn concerned with travel and throw a fit if any addition isn't within walking distance of them?

ECU fans would complain if they got an invite to the SEC that the conference was "too regional".

You want the truth, we are just pissed off. We're not having financial issues. We make more than enough to cover the travel. Our fans would like to be able to have road conference games in travel distance, but we are for the most part disgusted with the teams we'd have to add to achieve that. I am beyond pissed off that our AD and President are pushing Charlotte. That is stupid beyond belief. The BE is out there looking for every large market possible, with little concern about how good they actually are or how many people give a crap about the school and we are actively trying to promote a team in the largest market in our state, who hasn't played a down of football, and who has good basketball history and a long standing relationship with around half of the current BE? That is just whistling past the graveyard. That's not learning a single lesson from the past months. Make them move to the Sun-Belt and if the BE wants to add them from there let them. Pushing them up to C-USA is just going to make it real easy on the BE.

It's time for us to make the Sun-Belt your farm system. UNT, MTSU, and the F_U's are large market schools the BE isn't ever going to want. Add them and leave the FCS call ups to the Belt. GSU and Charlotte are teams I can see the BE being interested in, so leave them there and if you guys want them you can add them from there.

This...

I can see the MW/Alliance trying to plug in a Portland State type before bringing the Vandals on board. Small, remote, and mediocre are not the traits the MW/Alliance is looking for.

No offense to Idaho intended, I've enjoyed the games. Being in Moscow has just put limits on the programs growth.

Idaho has some positives. I think personal relationships might come into play here, as well. This is assuming that another MWC members is lost to the Big East. If a warm body is needed, then it wouldn't surprise me that Idaho manages to sneak in.

Idaho is the land grant college for their state.

They'd look as good as all of the alphabet soup brands that the Alliance seems to be taking in.

Even being a land grant school, it's in a very low population state. Even if they could claim the entire state of Idaho (which i think Boise State might object to)The State has a population of 1.58 million. Smaller then the MSA for all the schools being mentioned for addition on both sides of the "Alliance" except LaTech. That is giving them a BIG benefit of the doubt without probably deserving it. They also have the smallest stadium in FBS with the Kibbie Dome which doesn't play in to being a huge draw in the state. The Dome's record Crowd is 17,600 according to Wikipedia, and that was 23 years ago.

No Hate intended. just facts. it sucks for them being way out on an island.

Mississippi used to be a low population state, surly. If a conference is doing really long range planning, you'd want to cover as many bases as possible...

27,936.... the average attendance for a football game the past 5 years for the 7 new little east football schools. That includes SDSU free firework nights!!!

what's that about markets???

I'm not going to even do the numbers for bball, but I'm guessing below the 5,000 mark

What was that you guys were saying??? "punch in the gut"???

What does Memphis bball avg on its own? About 17k. For the Big East to average less than 5000, the other 4 schools would have to average about 1800 each. Nice try.

5 schools to average 5k would be 25k total average. that would be 2k for the other 4 schools, which would be 2k for the other schools. I'm not looking it up, but I don't think my numbers are that far off.

2011 figures:
SMU 1970
Houston 3281
UCF 6370
Temple 5925
Memphis 16768
avg of 6862.

So your numbers are only about 37% off.

oh, I see last season numbers, that puts it in perspective, my guess was off by 1800 fans... out goes memphis, average is about 4k, but anyways, 27k average for football over the past 5 years, and that includes all of bsu's bcs runs, the houston bcs run last season, the two seasons when ucf won cusa. Yup, markets!!!

Agreed. And I hear Idaho is growing rapidly due to people leaving the west coast and settling mostly in the boise area. I have a colleague who lives in Boise and absolutely loves it there. I believe Boise State is SOOOO far ahead of Idaho at this point that it will be, for all intents and purposes impossible to compete for the T-Shirt fans (those that cheer but never attended) for the foreseeable future.
