willie t > david elson.

so there is better coaching at western. mainly because willie t has brought in much better players than elson did.

Yup,

Remember all that momentum FAU had after back to back bowls in '07 and '08?

Momemtum is a great thing, unfortunately it also leads players/coachs to rest on thier laurels as well.

All respect to Troy and UNT here. thyey achieved great consistency in 5 year spans being on top of the confrence. Thats not easy.

RE: Troy, ASU projected for bowls ...
It's way to early to predict which teams are going to bowls. Alot will happen between now and the end of next season, but if I had to guess which two teams had the best chance of getting to bowls next year, I'd have to go with ASU and ULL, with WKU also in the running. That is not a knock on Troy. I just need to see improvment from what they did last season. As a UNT fan I've seen first hand how one bad season can snowball into a half decade slump. Troy has a great coach, and I don't expect them to stay down for long, but I can't see how they are picked to get to a bowl over ULL, or even WKU.

And my comment wasn't really about whether or not Troy will be good or whether or not they could win the league in 2012. I just don't think Troy will be the standard bearer going forward. Hopefully the Sun Belt has grown enough that it will never again be looked at as a one program league.

I understand it was not directed towards Troy. I was just saying coaching only goes so far and is only one factor in success. No team pulled in a class full of four star recruits and no team even averaged 3 stars. The recruiting classes pulled in were all about the same it's going to come down to which team works the hardest not who is coaching.

I'm not even sure if there is a best coach in this league because all of the teams will tell you their coach is the best. FIU fans will say MC is the best, Troy fans will tell you LB is a proven legend, ULL fans will say their guy is the best, Whoever the coach is for UNT he seems to be doing a decent job.

But were all just throwing our opinions like I think Malzhan is going to be a great coach but right now he is 0-1 and didn't win the Sun Belt for you guys the previous coach did. Next year I expect him to have a great team but he isn't the only great offensive mind in the conference.

0-1? Malzahn didn't coach the bowl game.

If you don't see that coaches in the Sun Belt are now much better than when Blakeney had his run - I'm not sure I could convince you that water is wet.

And this is as much about Cristobal, Hudspeth, and McCarney as it is Malzahn. And for that matter, Pelini, in all probability . . .

Oh I thought he coached in the bowl because he was on the news saying it was his priority to finish ranked. But I'm not the biggest Blakeney supporter but I would not say those guys are "better" coaches.

But the guy has had one losing season in ......years. If he would have had four losing seasons in a row I would say the game has passed him but the guy once again has coached five straight conference titles and has lead one of the best passing offenses in the country pretty consistently. I complemented all the new coaches in the Sun Belt but let's give Malzahn and Peleni a year to actually coach before we anoint them as top coaches.

The point is not that Blakeney is bad all of a sudden - the point is that he now has much tougher competition. It will be much more difficult for ANY coach to dominate the Sun Belt like Blakeney did, henceforth. And WKU has a pretty good coach as well now, FWIW.

Just because the competition got better doesn't mean he wont handle it. Do I expect Troy to win the Sun Belt five straight times again any time soon? No. But do I expect Troy to compete for the title? Yes, I'm not going to go into depth but in Blakeney's career the guy has gone against plenty of record setting coaches like Urban Myer, Jim Tressel, Steve Spurrier, and more.

Most the teams in the conference have a decent coach like I said before and most the teams brought in a good recruiting class. Things are very equal at this point and anyone can win next year.

No matter how much he wanted too, Malzahn had no say in the Bowl game. There's a sports illustrated article floating around the net somewhere that followed him in Mobile.

We stunk, but thankfully that was with a bunch of coaches whose previous jobs had been high school or FCS schools.

He actually said he did not want to coach the bowl game. He said he did not know the players, and thought it would be best to leave it in the hands of Gunn and others. He did want to be there for the game and offer any help he could, but would not be coaching because he thought it would not be fair to the other coaches that had been preparing them all along.

I thought Troy was one of the more talented teams ASU played last year. Losing WRs hurt but I think people fail to recognize how much of it is attitude and confidence and that is what was most different about Troy compared to previous years in my opinion. The loss of the aforementioned skill players probably contributed to the change in attitude and confidence by the time they rolled into Jonesboro.

I don't think there is a huge difference in talent from the top to bottom in our conference. The key is to get on a roll and ride. Honestly, our conference, talent wise, is right there with CUSA, slightly better than the MAC and better than the WAC.

+1

Troy's season last year was all about setting expectations to high and having to face reality. Honestly our QB didn't even know who he was throwing to and still was only 100 yards shy of being the top passer in the league with no bowl game while playing 2-3 games injured.

We bring in two 3 star WR's who both run 4.5 40's, get back Jamel Johnson (6'3 200lbs quick good hands) who was our projected starter, get back Eric Thomas who had one of the better YPC averages with 875 yards on 67 catches, and get back all four WR's under him who had catches.

We have plenty of talent on offense....It's just the defense Troy has to worry about and someone in this 30+ recruiting class has to be better than what we had last year.

I'll be shocked if we make a bowl after what I witnessed last year. It is obvious the losers in charge of the athletics in Troy are not serious about their jobs and could not care less if Blakeney runs the program into the ground.

If we make a bowl we will probably have a 28 point lead in the 4th and Blakeney will decide to throw the ball every down leading to 4 or 5 three and outs and yet another famous Troy-choke. Hell, Troy-choke actually sounds like it should be one word.

Troy will have a winning season next year this much I know....Troy has never had Back to Back Losing seasons under Larry since 1991. In fact after a bad season Troy has had a 7+ win season the following season.

Every head coach has bad years. Paul Bear Bryant was one season away from being fired after 4 or 5 consecutive years of terrible football. Then he reeled off 8 or so straight years of football dominance, and I'd hardly say during those years of terrible football that he wasn't serious about his job or say that nobody on his staff cared if they won or lost. Just because Blakeney has had a few years that weren't up to snuff doesn't mean he or his staff doesn't care. Same deal.

For the record, I'm not an alabama fan by any means, but I respect alabama's place in college football over the years.

The offense will only go uphill and the fact that we brought in 15+ defensive recruits/transfers shows to tell you they want to do something about the defense NOW even if they have to replace every starter.

Despite sucking last year we are still the clear cut third FBS best team in this state that loves college football and you have to look no further than UAB and it's 3-4 three star recruit's to know this.

Never say never.

At a certain point the older coachs DO lose thier teams and coordinators. A generation gap just seems to appear and cant be bridged. Im not saying LB is at that point yet, but trust me that gap is ahead there and probably closer then further away.

Just curious, but did any of the "bigger" schools ever offer to hire CLB away from Troy?

This is the key year I think. He has to win now with the JC transfers because if he doesn't....he has eaten his seed corn.

I think so but some people are just happy with their job.

Look at the coach at Boise, I'm sure every big school that needs a coach has called him. CLB is the oldest coach now and currently has more wins than any coach if I'm not mistaken.

I admire the guy because he is one of the few people in this world left with a sense of honor.
