So what if the alliance goes to 24.......
....it will not be the end of the world for the SBC.

Consider.

Assuming the Alliance went to 24, this would probably be the SBC lineup that is the result:

New Mexico State
Texas State
Arkansas State
UALR
ULM
Louisiana
South Alabama
Troy
Middle Tennessee or WKU
Georgia State

As a group, that's an equal to better basketball conference than we have now.

That's an equal to better baseball conference than we have now.

That's a football conference which has 4 teams that have gone to recent bowls.

That's a conference with 2 bowl tie-ins.

That's a conference with options still on the table in several FCS schools looking to jump in further down the road.

Look, they're not splitting the atom over there. Whatever gap the eastern side of the Alliance can widen between itself and the SBC thru expansion will be inconsequential in a few years as realities become known.

If we really take a look at this objectively, is there a real possibility that the Belt loses that many teams to an Alliance that was formed out of desperation? Would it be a pertinent move from something that is gaining momentum to something to throw travel money at, frankly? I'm not really sure about this, but I do have the sense that the collective presidents are on one accord and I don't see anyone bailing, at this point. Short of fan likes and dislikes, who knows of an administration that would seek refuge in a beleaguered cusa remnant of a conference? Would you be happy with them if they did?

I expect some Sun Belt programs to turn down an Alliance of Leftovers invite.

Would be foolish to not try and grab the brass ring. I sincerely doubt any member would turn down an invite.

I don't think the Alliance takes both FIU and FAU and I don't think we take New Mexico State under any circumstance.

That is the common thought.

But this is basically CUSA and MWC glued together increasing travel costs without their previous best teams included plus only having only one conference championship to award instead of two.

Now it is true that there are apparently some dumb advertising execs who will possibly pay more in tv rights than they did for a better MWC and CUSA when they were separate....but not sure that is going to be enough in the long run.

It is not as clear cut of a slam dunk as the current conventional wisdom says.

I have to laugh there. That had to be the biggest no duh update in sports. You mean the entire WAC wants to join the alliance rather then fall into oblivion? Wow who knew? Thanks CBS!

As for FIU and UNT, we've known about those two for a while. I think only one ends up leaving.

Please tell us who these programs are. Is it anyone who is being seriously considered by the alliance. If not, how could they turn down a "non-invite" ?

The most frequent mentions are:
FIU, UNT, MTSU and then FAU

I seriously doubt that any of those would turn down an invite.

If they go to 24, they'll immediately split into two conferences.

I don't see the NCAA giving them a waiver to have semi-final matchups, and the loopholes around this are prohibitively expensive, or antithetical to the reason for having them.

I give this conference 5 to 10 years. No real value in this merger. Maybe a little more tv money. Larger travel expenses for Olympic sports. If conf big mistake gets to 24 teams I could possible see three different conferences on break up.
