I like how people like to throw out Southern Miss because of one good season. But let's ask you this.

Aside from this season when was the last time Southern Miss was ranked? Probably when Brete Farve was still in college. And how many Conference USA titles does Marshall own?

UCF was the best team last year, Houston has been the best team 2 maybe three times, SMU a large market and the most tradition, and Memphis was the best basketball team and host to the best bowl game.

So yes you lost your four best teams. No one cares about USM and Marshall or you would be in AQ conferences by now.

Gimme a break. USM is THE best non AQ football program in the south.

We have had 18 straight winning seasons, been to bowl games 13 out of the past 14 years and have finished ranked 3 times in the past 15 years (1997, 1999, 2011)

C-USA still keeps USM, ECU, and Tulsa. Those schools combined have 4 of the past 7 C-USA titles.

My question for you is the following: When was the last time Troy finished a season ranked in both major polls?

In fairness, very few...like nobody...has had the long term success that USM has had. You guys have been able to get 'er done...for sure.

I respect the belt and have said that over and over. Everyone has a opinion and I have a right to express mine as you do also. Have good day and btw Troy wont be invited.05-stirthepot

When the MergAlliance goes belly up...Marshall won't be getting an invite to the Sun Belt. Have fun banking on a non-existant tv contract and flying to Hawaii.

No one can argue USM's success. But the only reason you can claim best non-AQ football program in the south is because TCU is joining the Big 12, and Houston is joining the Big East. That is the problem with the MergAlliance. The sexy teams that everyone wants are gone. No AQ conference is beating down Southern Miss, Tulsa, or ECU's door. You are right about no SBC team ever being ranked to end a season, and that is more a problem of perception. Arkansas State should have been ranked going into the bowl game last year. FIU, Arkansas State, and UL will topple that giant in the next coming years.

Houston is joining the Big East.

USM proved this year that we are a better program than UH. We crushed the Coogs, 48-28.

I never targeted a poster as being "stupid," but I do think this merger is in fact stupid. that's an opinion that does not single anyone out and I am entitled to say such. This is the Sun Belt board, if you don't like our opinions you are free to post elsewhere. Like I said, we don't like people who come here to insult or belittle our league or our membership. I don't think ANYONE likes outsiders coming in and doing that on their home board.

I reread this thread and from what I can tell our friends from the conference formerly known as CUSA were nothing but civil but were harassed by a couple of childish acting SBC fans. Just my opinion. I and many of our SBC fans post on a variety of boards and all we ask is the right to post our opinions. They can respectfully disagree but throwing a tantrum and telling them to go home is for children folks. Sadly, this is par for the course for a couple of our posters.

Benson is one of my least favorite people in the world. Texas does not need two more FBS programs. I will never forgive him for that.

I want UNT out of the Sun Belt now that Benson is running the show. I have no interest in going where he will take this conference. I have no interest in watching the Sun Belt become a WAC/Belt hybrib, or watch him open the door to more FCS programs. The Sun Belt has spent enough time being a gateway conference. I really hope North Texas gets into the new alliance. If we don't get in, I'd really like to push the MAC for a spot. I will miss playing you guys, but in my opinion, the Sun Belt will not be an ideal situation for North Texas, now that Benson is in charge. I know some of you will find my conclusions irrational, but believe me, it is how I feel, and I will not change my mind.

Don't let the door hit you on the way to the conference USA board. You can join the club of UNT fans they ridicule every week for posting stadium pictures and begging fans who make no decision to add them.

Post like these really hurt us as a conference.

Benson should not have been selected. His selection is hurting this conference. This conference is improving on the field. Now he wants to go and muck it up by adding more teams. replacing teams lost to C-USA/MWC is one thing, but expanding to 12 and bringing in more FCS programs is a plan I want no part of for North Texas. I was happy with the Sun Belt.
Honestly, one of those teams is going to be La Tech. The writing is on the wall for them. They know where they are going to be. Texas State and UTSA were coming up anyway. Remember when UNT came up? The Sun Belt welcomed them with open arms. Show some respect. You sound like a child who just had to be told by his mommy to share his toys. Come back when UNT actually fields a baseball teams for gods sake.

Texas State and UTSA were not coming up anyway. They didn't have a conference invite. Not until Benson extended one to them. If Benson found a couple of FCS programs in Louisiana, and extended them invites, you'd be pissed too.

I can live with UTSA moving up, because I can see the long term financial benifit, but there is no need for Texas to have 12 FBS programs. If we wanted to play Texas State we would have stayed in the Southland Conference. I have no interest in watching Benson add FCS programs to the Belt. This conference has been a gateway conference for too long.

The simple fact is I don't want UNT in the Benson Belt. I don't like where he is planning on taking this conference. He needs to go, or we need to go.

Getting back to the thread topic, the more prescient question to me is, if your school got the call, what would your current president/AD do?

Objectively as you can be (and I know how hard that is, as we're all partisans), what do you think THEY'D do?

Now, answer my question.

The real question is, "Do I want to be in a conference with USM, UAB, ECU, Marshall and Tulane?"

Absolutely.

Do I want to be in a conference with Wyoming, Nevada, UNLV, Utah State, and some other west coast teams, absolutely not. Whay would I want to be in a conference that will play our games at 11 at night???

I didn't say they weren't going to happen.

You bring up some good questions, and I'm looking to hear more details on how logistically it's going to work, like everyone else.

I'm also a fan, like everyone else, and have to trust my school's president and AD to chart the course that they believe is in the school's best interests.

Am I trying to put a positive spin on it? Maybe, I'm a fan after all.

Is it as good as I necessarily have to hope it's going to be, or as bad as some people think it's going to be? I guess we'll all find out together.

Wow, a decent well thought out point by a UAB fan that wasn't cussing me at the same time. 04-rock

There still alot of changes that are going to happen, ECU may still get that invite to the Big East they have been begging for. The Big 12 may still try to get back to 12.

I just wonder how much the TV networks are willing to pay for this conferences TV rights. I don't see it being any more valuable then what was there before.

I think if we hold serve on those fronts, it will be a victory.

I see this alliance as a potentially innovative way to make the best of what everyone knows is a disappointing turn of events for CUSA.

RE: If your school got the call(and you were in charge)...
I understand your viewpoint, I just don't agree with it. I think there is a better way to do this that will make for a better fan experience. And that is what this is all about. But it is arrogance and a sense of entitlement that one school thinks they are better then another because of the conference they are affiliated with.

I'm going to use UAB as an example, not an attack on you, but what has UAB done on the football field to "deserve" anything. UAB has basketball, but that isn't what is driving all this realignment. UAB doesn't bring a TV audiance, they won't even bring the local Birmingham media.

On the other hand, if UAB played a more regional schedule, just like most of the big boys do, they would get more exposure. I feel more people would tune in if they were playing more teams that were close enough for fans to travel with ease to each others campus. UAB would be located in the heart of a conference that focused regionally then one that stretches from the east coast to Hawaii.
