It could be touch and go though, unless they try the nationwide approach. Lamar is certainly a possibility and UT-Arlington has talked about reviving FB down the road. But most of the western FCS schools have been very reluctant so far. If the Montana schools plus Lamar and UTA join with Texas St, UTSA, Idaho, La Tech, Utah St, NMSU and SJSU then that gives them 11 and they could survive losing a few schools. La Tech, USU, SJSU and UTSA are all good possibilities for the MWC or CUSA or the Alliance if that happens. I hope the WAC does survive as an FBS conference. My school was a member for over 30 years. They have to get past a lot of "ifs" to make it.
WAC leadership right now is waiting around for the merger to make its decision before it decides to expand.
If the merger doesn't expand then why not add Lamar for the 8th team and try to invite 4 FCS schools football only to have a championship game?
In the East the WAC could invite Missouri State and Georgia State. In the west the WAC could add Portland State and Sacramento State.
WAC
EAST: UTSA, Tx State, Lamar, La Tech, Missouri State, Georgia St
WEST: Portland ST, Sac St, San Jose St, Idaho, Utah St, NM St.
This way the WAC doesn't have to grow beyond 12 members in basketball, have divisions with 12 in football and offer Missouri St and Georgia State a way to get their football programs to the FBS level.
The idea of the WAC adding a mass of eastern schools for upgrades has been talked about in the past but I think it makes more sense to apply the football only principal in both the East and West directions.
Georgia State could keep its other sports in the CAA, Missouri State could keep its sports in the MVC. They can stay in the WAC until the alliance has an opening for both in all-sports.
