I only doubt ULMs ability because they've already bled their other programs to bring football to its current level. There does not appear to be other money available.
People, ULM will be just fine. We are doing quite well with doing things the way that we are doing them. We do thank you for your interest in ULM, but as long as we are not finishing dead last in the SBC there should be no worry with respect to ULM. If we can pay a coach $250k to beat other SBC coaches that are being paid twice his salary, then why should people be alarmed about that circumstance?
He's not alarmed.. he just doubts your ability to raise funds to compete over the long haul. Not the same thing.

Yes it is. Stated as objectively and non argumentative as possible.
Now if you have other facts, I am willing to reconsider. But the facts known to me form the basis of my opinion.

SBC Arms Race...

Gus might leave in 2 years but...
WKU has a coach who turned down Memphis for less money in part because he has ties. Gus turned down a big payday at Vandy. When he was a high school coach he accepted then turned down a job for a substantial raise. His history says he is not dollar driven. He has refused to even interview for a couple jobs that were big raises. As long as he feels challenged, the admin stays out of his way, and his family is happy he is a threat to stay.
My sources say he has bonuses tied to contributions to the program and tied to contributions from people who have never contributed. If he is successful and season tickets and donations rise he can be above a million a year in 3-4 years.

Had been rumored around the WKU faithful.

I also have my doubts about ASU and ULL being able to keep their salary levels high for the long run. There's no turning back, folks. You've got to keep grinding it out, year after year. And you've eventually have to start raising salaries for the other sports because they will demand it. You have to keep finding money and finding money and finding money. I made the comment in the ULM forum: I'm not worried about the ripple effect of the ASU hire to the Sun Belt Conference...I'm worried about the ripple effect at ASU.
Just my opinion.

If you are not moving forward, you are falling behind. We will continue to be fine, as will our friends at stAte, WKU who just gave their HC a big raise, and the rest of the conference who are showing their commitments in their own way.

I totally disagree and what everyone is discounting is the program is in fact about to go to another level.
Apparently this past season has opened a lot of doors previously shut to ASU in the state of Arkansas and there are some rich people/corporations in this state.Landing Malzhan just insured that the buzz around ASU continues and those doors remain open.
The national media is right, ASU did not hit a home run they hit a walk off grand slam with the hiring of Malzahn.

You are way wrong about ASU. ASU is only paying Gus 157k. The rest is coming from donors. All these Belt schools are stepping up and hiring good coaches. ULM might not have finished last in previous years but they will soon. Young recruits love name coaches. ULL, FIU, ASU, NT, Troy MTSU and now FAU all have coaches with a name high school players know. ULM will be left behind when all is said and done.
