Taggart's $475K deal draws praise, criticsm
Brad Stephens College Heights Herald | 1 comment

One of Willie Taggart’s favorite saying in his time as WKU head coach has been that “nobody” has it better than his Toppers.

And after Taggart was given a contract with a $475,000 base salary on Wednesday, nobody on campus has it better financially than Taggart.

The second-year head coach will now make substantially more than President Gary Ransdell ($361,000), the university’s next-highest paid employee.

It was a move that had Faculty Regent Patti Minter questioning WKU’s priorities.

...and when he wins 11 games they will question his loyalty when he leaves for an SEC or ACC job.

If he wins 11 games , I would say the whatever bowl game we played in would pay a nice increase in his salary, to go alone with WKU's big money donors. WKU is going o try to keep him here as long as he is successful

Anyone that is on this board is a sports fan. So I think most of you would join me in saying to the faculty: Bite me.

I think it's funny when people have these kind of reactions. A lot of people at WKU would love to be a lot more like Kentucky or Louisville as a university(just like all of us would like our school's to be a lot more like the major state universities in our states, from the standpoint of national recognition, funding, etc. etc.) Well guess what? At most of the major universities around the country the football and/or basketball coaches are the highest paid employees on campus and usually by a much more dramatic difference than at Sun Belt schools. Being a big university and having a big time athletics program go pretty much hand in hand with the only major exception being the Ivies.

The time to debate priorities is before jumping to the FBS.

These salaries are about in line with most Non-AQ schools.

Probably not a HC at any of the AQ schools that are not paid more than any other employee at the school and they tend to have a lot better people in these non-athletic positions than SBC schools do.

I like this move. Taggert has moved WKU out of the FBS cellar, and is moving them up into a competitive position, although hopefully he has them a little more active early in the season next year. With that said, what I really like about the move is that this fully proves that this league is behind football when the most Basketball heavy school has its highest paid employee as the Football Coach. THAT says something.

Seems like no problem really. Head coach is one of the hardest jobs there is. Not many English Professors stay up half the night working, or go in at 5AM, baby a potential player to get him committed, or hear criticism anytime you lose or miss a certain recruit. Would want to pay him even more if they have to, would just mean he is that much more successful.

I think that's actually pretty common. Pretty sure Stock makes about double what Dr. McPhee does.

makes me appreciate the fact Larry makes less than $300,000 base each year. Troy has gotten more bang for our buck than anyone else at the FBS level.

I have no idea how much Chancellor Hawkins makes, but I guarantee it's far more than Coach Blakeney.

Be careful mentioning Penn State and showering.

Highly doubtful. He may make more than Blakeney, but it's not far more.

Dr. Sidney McPhee, president at Middle Tennessee, makes less than $300k annually. I'm sure Chancellor Hawkins pay rate is similar.

I'd be okay with Blakeney making minimum wage. Then I'd be happy with the results. No tips though unless he actually tries to win OOC games.
