A Pac 12 scheduling change that may point to imminent BYU-Big12 union
Why do you suppose Oregon State who had a 9/1/2012 game with BYU had to scramble to play Nicholls State?
I think it is a strong sign that at least football is coming to the Big 12. An indy team not names Notre Dame has a hard time getting 1 for 1 games with BCS schools and they would not cancel/postpone this game and possibly sour a needed scheduling relationship for a minor concern and particularly not when they are having trouble getting good teams to come to Provo. It isn't likely to be postponed as with very rare exception the Pac12 will not be playing non-conference games after September. So why on earth would all this happen if not the Big 12?

Nothing is official but it looks very promising considering the reports of UT wanting to stay, the BU legal team lowering their guns, and the frequent BYU, Texas, OU, and (I am still skeptical about this part) ND rumors.
Time will tell but a very interesting piece of news in light of what A&M announced this morning.

BYU would have to cancel as at least three other scheduled 2012 football games to play B12 football in 2012. Even w/o the Oregon State game:
9/08 Weber State
9/15 at Utah
9/22 at Boise State
10/05 Utah State
10/13 at Georgia Tech
10/20 at Notre Dame

Totally agree. One game isn't a pattern. If anything, it's just a sign that Oregon State doesn't want to lose. These kind of cancellations happen all the time.

A new series with UH could be difficult unless we were conference mates.
"BYU will open the series on the road at Robertson Stadium in Houston on Oct. 19, 2013. The BYU Cougars will then play host to the Houston Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 27, 2014."
Mid October is a bit late to schedule an OOC game. Heck 9/27 is pushing it as well.

That might be it. Oregon State has a game against Wisconsin on 9/8 next year, maybe they wanted an FCS tune-up before playing Wisconsin.

I do find it odd that it hit the day A&M announced they were leaving. It could easily be something else but I doubt it when you consider the timing and everything that has been reported about the B12 looking at BYU.

Oregon State was BYU's only good home game in 2012. BYU will be throwing a fit if they plan on being indy in 2012. I guess we will wait and see what BYU's reaction is.

I would assume Boise and Georgia Tech would be gonzo from BYU's schedule if they went to Big 12. Then which instate foe do you drop for Notre Dame.

Why in heaven's name would you cancel the game before you've officially been accepted into the conference? If we learned anything last summer it's that nothing is official until papers are signed and the press conference happens.

Is Oregon State allowed to just ditch the game like that? Don't they still owe BYU a game in Provo?

Unless Oregon State reached a mutual agreement with BYU to cancel/postpone the game.

I wouldn't read much into it. I do think BYU is the logical pick up. If they come it will be all sports not FB only.

Ummmm All independents manage to find OOC games in mid october.. ND, Army, and Navy don't stop playing after September and most teams have a bye in their current conference slate...
