This pie in the sky attempt by Beebe may well be an ill conceived preemptive strike to keep that from happening.

Something to remember. Whenever Notre Dame's name comes up tied conference membership, it's either a clueless sports journalist or some desperate league official bringing it up.

Yep. The conferences who were in stable positions at the time who talked to Notre Dame, the Big Ten and ACC, those talks were never made public. Why? Because they were desperate. I also agree with you CJ about this possibly being a preemptive strike. Marinatto's comment about 12 different schools contacting the Big East should we decide to expand are interesting, especially the timing of it.
