Sports Network Preview of South Alabama
article previews South Alabama and three other teams discussed from time to time here...

excerpts:

Quote:...Following is a team-by-team breakdown of the 2011 FCS Independents.

The Sports Network's predicted order of finish: 1. Texas State 2. University of Texas San Antonio 3. Georgia State 4. South Alabama ...

...

SOUTH ALABAMA JAGUARS (10-0 overall)

COACH:Joey Jones (17-0 in two seasons at South Alabama, 20-7 overall)

STARTERS RETURNING: 17 (9 offense/8 defense)

OFFENSIVE STAR: RB Kendall Houston, So. (140 carries for 891 yards, 10 TDs)

DEFENSIVE STAR: LB Enrique Williams, Jr. (48 TT, 1 TFL, 1 sack, 3 PBU)

OTHER KEY PLAYERS: QB C.J. Bennett, So. (86 of 140 for 1,189 yards, 9 TDs, 2 INT; 42 carries for 163 yards, 2 TDs) RB Brandon Ross, Sr. (36 carries for 278 yards, 5 TDs) RB Demetre Baker, Fr. (transfer from Georgia) WR T.J. Glover, So. (39 carries for 234 yards, 2 TDs; 14 receptions for 155 yards, 1 TD) WR Corey Waldon, Jr. (14 receptions for 291 yards) WR Bryan Lavendar, Jr. (16 receptions for 276 yards, 2 TDs) OL Trey Clark, Jr. OL Jon Griffin, Sr. OL Chris Brunson, Sr. OL Melvin Meggs, Fr. DL Anthony Taylor, Jr. (19 TT, 3 TFL, 2 sacks) DL Montavious Williams, So. (16 TT, 4 TFL) DL Romelle Jones, So. (19 TT, 1 TFL, 1 sack) LB Logan Bennet, So. (24 TT, 2 TFL, 3 sacks) LB Jake Johnson, Jr. (31 TT, 4 sacks) DB Damond Smith, Jr. (transfer from Western Michigan) DB Ken Barefield, Jr. (37 TT, 3 PBU, 1 INT) DB BJ Scott, Jr. (transfer from Alabama) P Scott Garber, So. (40.4 avg.) K Lawson McGlon, So. (12-17 FG)

OUTLOOK: Don't let South Alabama's perfect 17-0 mark since starting a football program fool you, the Jaguars are still a long ways away from joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2013. Of those 17 victories, 14 came against NAIA, Division II and III or college prep teams, all games the Jaguars would have been disappointed to lose. Last year, South Alabama did go 4-0 against FCS teams, including a surprising three-point victory at UC Davis. Bringing back nine starters from an explosive offensive unit - which is slightly inflated considering the competition - South Alabama will be tough to stop on the ground as six of the top rushers return. The defense is an experienced group, but has yet to be truly tested over the past two seasons, that'll change this season. Playing the toughest schedule in the program's three-year history, the 17-game winning streak will come to an end soon, almost certainly by the fourth week of the season when the Jaguars visit Kent State.

At least he did a little research, but does he really think we're the worst of that bunch? Maybe he was surprised we beat Cal-Davis on the road, but we weren't. And he probably just looked at the final score of the Ga State game and thought it was a close one but statistically we crushed them. A few mistakes on the part of the Jags made it look tighter than it was.

I have little doubt that we will win against the two other independents we play this year (UTSA and Ga State) and go on to a record that is no worse than 8-2.

Yeah, that's a good source of information on four southern FCS independents, a Philadelphia news source. Good grief. If South Alabama is not any better than those other teams, then we should give up football and not go any farther.

I was really hoping to see you guys play UTSA at the Alamodome this year. Unfortunately my schedule didn't work out. Good luck!
