Bad day of practice for ASU
We already lost our Backup QB Phillip Butterfield to injury today, he was carted off holding his knee an hour ago. Now we have an ambulance being brought onto the field to take off one of our offensive linemen
Team's decided to stop todays scrimmage early
Butterfield would be a major blow, as that would leave Ryan Aplin as our only scholarship QB, our 3rd string QB is a freshman wide receiver. And offensive line is still our weak link on the team

That would be a major blow indeed. If he's lost for the season, every single time Aplin scrambles every ASU coach, player and fan will be holding their breath. With a capable backup, an injury to Aplin probably means the difference in contending for the championship and being middle of the pack. With a freshman wide receiver as his backup, it would probably mean the difference between contending for the championship and fighting to stay out of last place.

It's sad to see kids go down with injuries. I hate to say that it's part of the game, but someone that's unproven will have to set up, for the sake of the team...good luck, stAte!

Bummer. Something none of us need. We saw all of our QBs go down last year. Hope your guy's injury is not serious and that he can return soon.[/i]

This happened to us one year against a BCS team at home; too many linemen injured. They are SO important!

Best of luck to both kids that their injuries are not as serious, and they come back fully healthy in the near future.

Eric Allen Backup Center is the name of the offensive linemen. It looked like a neck injury, but he was able to move his arms and legs
I heard the dreaded 3 letter ligament that starts with A when Butterfield was mentioned. Though nothing official

IMO the defensive player should not have planted Frankie Jackson on the QB's leg.
This is the most aggressive defense I have seen at ASU in years and they are going to hurt a lot of players this year but the DC should rein them in a little when playng against their team mates.

Report from a very somber Hugh Freeze
Butterfield is likely done for the season. its unofficial but training staff says he tore his ACL
Believes that Allen may be okay, and that the ambulance was a precautionary thing because it was a neck injury
Said he couldnt let the team continue to practice after all that happened...wouldnt be right

At least the Freshman WR, Stephen Hogan, won a 5A state championship last year playing QB and can pass well enough that he got moved to QB before this happened, not in response to it.

No team will ever be without players who played QB in high school. At one point I remember us having like two running backs, one WR, one safety, and on cornerback who played QB in high school. Right now just off the top of my head I can think of at least one WR and at least one safety on our team that played QB in high school, Sancho McDonald(the WR) probably would have ended up at Rutgers as a QB before tearing his achilles tendon his senior year of high school.
There will always be options like this because so often at the high school level they just put the most athletic kid at QB, the problem is that they usually don't get a lot of reps at QB in college, especially if they are moved in response to an injury. You are right that it's fortunate the kid was moved before the injury, but it should also be noted that it was probably in response to the lack of depth. This kid will definitely see a lot of reps at QB the rest of the way through camp and now the coaches have to figure out who to put behind him on the depth chart.

Obviously. Without looking I can think of two kids now in different positions that played QB for ASU before, at least one in games, and two more of our best recruits that played QB in HS last year. The invited walk on QB and Hogan will probably compete for 2nd/3rd QB.

Hogan not only played QB in HS, but he played for one of the best offensive HS programs in the history of the state. THey knew he had ability at QB when he was signed. That's why he moved there BEFORE the injury to Butterfield. Better for it to happen now than 3 games in since we can give Hogan all the attention he needs to be ready to backup Aplin.

Terrible news. We all give gabs around here, but nobody wishes injuries on another team. I hope your players will be OK.

RE: Bad day of practice for ASU
Injuries are unfortunately part of the game. In 2009 Arkansas State lost two starters in the season-opener and it went downhill from there. For those who worry about injuries against BCS schools, the two worst injuries I've seen came against lower division teams. Jennings against Miss Valley State and a WR whose name escapes me right now against Central Arkansas (wasn't touched on the play just landed horribly after a catch).
In 2009 we started a running back at linebacker against WKU because we were out of players.
