Former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez to announce FIU football games
Former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez to announce FIU football games

Former CNN host Rick Sanchez will return to his South Florida roots this fall, serving as the color commentator for Florida International University's football games.

Sanchez will work alongside Tony Calatayud, who will handle play-by-play duties. FIU Football radio broadcasts on WMCU-1080 AM.

Sanchez said he won't get paid.

"I’m extremely excited to be volunteering my time to Florida International," he said in a statement. "I just wanted to give something back to the school because FIU has a very special place in my heart: two of my sons now attend FIU and I believe in FIU football."

Sanchez said it was an easy decision, since he already attends most games.

"I think this will be a lot of fun, and it will give me a chance to visit my sons and my parents more often," he asid.

Sanchez, 53, was a longtime anchor with WSVN Channel 7 inMiami. He left that job in 2001 to work as a news anchor forMSNBC. In 2002, he also started hosting a Spanish-language radio talk show, Buenas Tardes America.

His work atMSNBC failed to generate much buzz or ratings, and he returned to Miami in 2003 to host a talk show for WTVJ-Ch. 6.

He left again for CNN in 2004, where he stayed more six years. He started hosting his own show on the network, "Rick's List" in early 2010. The show combined news, opinion and audience comments through social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter..

Over the years, he has generated controversy for some of his comments and actions. He was fired from CNN in October 2010 following comments that some perceived to be anti-Semitic.

Well good...at least this will keep him from commenting on politics. 04-cheers

Z,

I can't believe I agree with you on something. I Hope he leaves his politics at home, and does better then Lamar Thomas at the FIU vs. Miami brawl.

I CANNOT see this ending well for FIU.

Other then the adage of "Any press is good press" this will only stir up people against your program.

WTH does he know about Football that would indicate he would be a good color guy? Unless he has a map that he can squat over and show the players in formation he will be next to useless.

Why FIU, Why does your admin continue to saddle you guys with publicity nightmares for your program?

Rick originally went to college on a football scholarship. The problem with Rick is he's shown a consistent pattern of selfdestructiveness.
I don't know if it's due to guilt from the DUI and cutting someone's life short or not. I wouldn't be surprised.

Cmon, you gotta admit that there will be issues with this. Do you really want people protesting outside of your stadium with posters saying "FIU hires Anti-Semites"?

It could easily happen if/when word spreads to the community.

Ill be listening to 4pm interview down here today since its on my way home. The one you have to worry about is when Dan Lebetard interviews him later. That could get ugly.

You are taking this to an extreme situation with the "anti-Semites" talk, but hey...it could happen and some might want that to happen.

It is an odd choice for sure, though.

You mean FIU's Jewish President, Dr. Mark Rosenberg, hires anti semites? ok. And no one is going to protest this hiring, they may make fun of it, which is anyones perogative, but I doubt anyone takes the time to actually protest.

Point taken, but as FIUPantherFan indicated, our Pres is Jewish. Personally I don't know how this will all pan out but one think I know for sure, all of south florida is now talking about panther football.

Who knows what will happen, I know I don't. I don't think it's actually a risky move, he's a commentator, if it turns south you can just cut him loose, I doubt there will be serious fallout from this move.
