WAC expansion: Does the Big East hold the key?
Combine upcoming TV negotiations with the growing football school/basketball school rift and the need for more football schools … and the Big East qualifies as the college sports world’s hot spot.

If the conference grabs Central Florida out of Conference USA, then C-USA must respond:

Will it attempt to keep a foothold in the recruiting-rich, heavily-populated Sunshine State by adding Florida Atlantic or Florida International? Or will C-USA turn to the WAC’s Louisiana Tech or the Sun Belt’s North Texas?

How does that trickle down to the WAC’s expansion plans? Because North Texas won’t consider joining the WAC, even with three Texas schools on board, until the door to C-USA is slammed shut.

What a load. UNT is joining the WAC because they can't get in CUSA. They would still prefer the Sun Belt as any rational person would prefer.

It sounds like they are holding hands with Tech and hoping for the CUSA invite. If that falls through, maybe Texas State will have their annual rival game.05-stirthepot

" And here’s one more possibility: If the C-USA door slams shut on North Texas and the school casts its eye to the WAC, then what about Louisiana Lafayette?

It would make sense for the Ragin Cajuns to consider leaving the Sun Belt for a bulked-up WAC featuring four Texas schools and LaTech.

Those six would form the eastern division, with a bevy of built-in rivalries and cheap intra-division travel costs."

I don't see this happening. ULL is an easy drive from ULM, USA, Troy, and can easily bus to North Texas, Ark State, Western Ky, UALR, and MTSU for the olympic sports. They currently have two obvious flying destinations in FIU and FAU. ULL would have to fly to NM State, Utah State, Denver, Seattle, Idaho, San Jose State, etc. if they joined the WAC.

Sure, La Tech would be a good rival for ULL, but Troy and MTSU are looking up in football. LTech isn't that big of a pull for them. And the most likely scenario for a raid by CUSA (which still isn't that likely) is for one of the two airplane schools (FIU/FAU) to be the one leaving, making the Belt more compact and travel friendly.

Besides, UNT has already told the WAC no thanks multiple times and when the WAC was a better conference.

The Belt is stable. And its relatively inexpensive for travel costs still compare favorably to the WAC.

Yes, that means UNT would be that fourth Texas School, already holding hands with Tech.05-stirthepot

RE: WAC expansion: Does the Big East hold the key?
I think if the C-USA lost Central Florida, there's either one of three things that could happen:

1) Conference USA adds just one Florida school (FAU or FIU) to get back to 12 and stops there. The Sun Belt sits pat at 9/10-the ideal combination for scheduling in football and basketball.

2) Conference USA readmits Charlotte, who upgrades to FBS.

3) Conference USA takes Temple, and the MAC fills their football-only whole with one of Delaware, James Madison, Charlotte, Illinois State, Missouri State, or Southern Illinois.

If multiple teams leave Conference USA, there are simply too many programs in bigger markets that would appeal to them more than Louisiana Tech. Georgia State and Charlotte (both of whom were once members of the Sun Belt) are FCS programs located in some of the largest markets not currently occupied by a non-AQ FBS conference. Also, Conference USA may not want to be so heavily concentrated in Texas and Louisiana-the Southwest Conference failed because its footprint limited its TV revenue.

My preference is to go ahead and pull the plug on the WAC like MWC Commisioner did. He didn't play around when Benson was trolling his schools. Go ahead and invite NMSU and another school and make the WAC a non-football league.

Benson doesn't have anything to sell any team from the SBC anymore. He can troll all he wants...he won't get any bites.

I don't want NM State or Utah State or some Southland school in the Belt. NM State jilted us before and they and Utah State are just too far away.

Let Benson troll. His net has way too many holes to catch anything.

I was just having a little fun with the NT fans. But seriously, I'm not interested in any FCS programs in the Eastern Time Zone either.

RE: WAC expansion: Does the Big East hold the key?
North Texas didn't join the WAC when it had Boise, Fresno, Nevada, or Hawaii. Though TSSM, UT-SA, and UT-A are much closer, we have no interest in playing a Southland Schedule again. We will not leave the Sun Belt for the new WAC.

As for FAU or FIU going to C-USA, I don't know if Boca is a big enough market, and the Caines have trouble getting decent attendance numbers in Miami. They could be the top targets if C-USA is dead set on staying in Florida, but I think MTSU could be up threr too. They have better attendance, a better T.V. market, and are more competitive across all sports. If Ol' North Tex can sell out the new stadium and maintain a sizable advantage over SMU in avg. attendance, I think the door will stay open for us too. Remember, this season, we get Houston at home and play Tulsa on the road. That's two opportunities to impress western C-USA programs. I don't think the door was ever open for LA Tech. Someone should tell them.

If there is a way to destroy the WAC and end their ability to promote any more FCS programs to the FBS, we need to do it.

I would guess that the addition of UMass takes Temple off the board for C-USA. We would only want them if they brought their other sports with them, but they most likely prefer the A10.

The only bargaining power we really had was the MAC's refusal to take them as a football-only member long term. I believe that has changed with UMass coming into the fold.

If we did lose UCF to the Big East, I would guess that Terry Holland would push for MTSU or WKU to replace them. I have absolutely no idea how the rest of the conference feels about this, but I'd wager Memphis would be very much against MTSU.

If Memphis is the only one opposed to such a move they would be reduced to sitting on their hands and keeping their mouths shut. That is, if it is something the rest of CUSA desires. CUSA could threaten to exit Memphis if it caused problems for the conference. What would Memphis do? They couldn't survive as an Independent like we can, and the Big LEast sure as heck ain't beatin' down their doors to invite Memphis. Memphis is at the mercy of Conference USA right now. That equals very little bargaining power.

I seriously doubt that C-USA would threaten Memphis in favor of MTSU - preposterous notion, really. Holland may be for this, and others okay with it, but MTSU isn't compelling. I don't say that to denigrate, but, honestly, La Tech, MTSU, W Ky, UNT, Ark State, S Ala, ULL------>is there a major difference between any of them worthy to create a crater?
I think that's La Tech's best chance (and it isn't great)....just take them and you get about the same as a sun belt team, but without messing with that conference.
It's more likely that a crater comes from the rest of the league's preference to move West even if an eastern team leaves. After all, USM, Memphis and UAB aren't that far east and a western team would suit them just as well as an eastern team, particularly if the western team brings more.

I wasn't trying to imply that Memphis would be the only school opposed to MTSU; just sayin' that they were the only one I assume would oppose MTSU. I do think that EdisonDoyle's last paragraph is spot on. Marshall and ECU would be the only teams wanting an Eastern candidate, while LaTech (or another centrally located school) would keep travel expenses down for much of the conference.
