It's slow so - Thread from the WAC board

Hiring a head coach with a 56-85 record and call it an improvement. You guys have to have the worst run program in all DI football. From 1991-2005 your win average was .390. Under Dodge you guys had a win average of .140. Wow mow I know why you guys suffer from little man syndrome. Hell at least we TXST Bobcats have TWO national titles. I don't think there is a single Team in the Sunbelt that has a national championship title. Forgive me if I'm wrong I don't care to check. Bottom line UNT is going no where fast. Sure you have new stadium. But to be honest it's ugly. And it will look worse when your team loses in it. Good luck to all of you and glad your not in our conference. We can play you out of conferece. Oh wait you only play body bag games for big dollars. Must be fun to watch you team fed to lions like bird meat.

These 1AA team fans are all the same. However, they may do well in the WAC seeing how it's basically a glorified 1AA conference now.

ULM has two national titles, in 1935 and 1987.

Texas State didn't win any NC's as a 1-AA/FCS member so they must have had theirs in D-II. What's going to be funny is when Texas State has to play those body bag games themselves. They can't escape it.

A Texas State fan talking junk?? you have no room to talk junk at all, especially about body bag games, if you're team is in the WAC. With Boise State and Hawaii leaving, the WAC will be sucked dry without BCS money. Nevada and Fresno State leaving is just icing on the cake. So TXST will be playing a lot of body bag games for money i bet.

I can't keep these Texas teams straight.

RE: It's slow so - Thread from the WAC board
Fun facts:

The last time Texas State beat North Texas in football was 1991. The Soviet Union still existed. Microsoft hadn't yet released Windows 3.1. The United States Constitution had one less amendment than it does now. Brett Favre had never completed an NFL pass. O.J. and Nicole Simpson were still married. Ty Detmer was still a college QB, Marshall Faulk was a freshman. Chuck Noll was still coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Minnesota North Stars were still 2 years away from moving to Dallas. The Dow Jones had never reached 3100. "Barney" and "The Real World" had yet to premiere on TV. "Beauty and the Beast", "JFK", "Basic Instinct", "My Cousin Vinny", "The Mighty Ducks", and "A League of Their Own" had yet to screen in theaters.

The only Texas State football team anyone could watch in the fall of 1991 was the Texas State Fightin' Armadillos, who played their games at Fouts Field in Denton, and who "Texas State" fans could only see in movie theaters in the film "Necessary Roughness".

The last time Texas State beat North Texas in men's basketball was 1994. The Dow Jones had never been above 4000; the NASDAQ had never been above 1000. Timothy McVeigh was still 4 months away from carrying out the Oklahoma City bombing. Windows 95 was still over half a year from release. Jason Kidd was halfway through his ROOKIE NBA SEASON. 3 current NBA franchises didn't exist at the time. 4 NFL teams didn't exist at the time. "Friends", "ER", and Fox NFL Football were all in their premiere seasons on TV.

North Texas leads the all-time football series, 29-7 (3 ties).

North Texas leads the all-time basketball series, 58-28.

In the entire history of both schools, North Texas leads in the 2 primary sports by nearly a 3 to 1 margin.

To be fair... The last time the two schools met in baseball, back in 1988, Texas State won 2 out of 3 games. There's your 23 year old, one game margin scoreboard, Bobcats.

For the record... I like Texas State. I went down to San Marcos for our road basketball game there this year. I wouldn't mind a semi-regular basketball series with them.

Most of their fans that I've come across, either online or (especially) in person, are pretty delightful people.

La Tech won 2 national championships before 1AA was "invented" in 1978. (1973 and 1974). I have no idea who all played at our level back then though.

Tech has never won a IAA title.

IAA didn't start to exist till 1978 and most schools didn't start to play football under the banner of IAA till 1980. Here are the title games.

Quote:1978 Florida A&M Massachusetts 35–28
1979 Eastern Kentucky Lehigh 30–7
1980 Boise State Eastern Kentucky 31–29
1981 Idaho State Eastern Kentucky 34–23
1982 Eastern Kentucky Delaware 17–14
1983 Southern Illinois Western Carolina 43–7
1984 Montana State Louisiana Tech 19–6
1985 Georgia Southern Furman 44–42
1986 Georgia Southern Arkansas State 48–21
1987 Northeast Louisiana† Marshall 43–42
1988 Furman Georgia Southern 17–12
1989 Georgia Southern Stephen F. Austin 37–34
1990 Georgia Southern Nevada 36-13
1991 Youngstown State Marshall 25–17
1992 Marshall Youngstown State 31–28
1993 Youngstown State Marshall 17–5
1994 Youngstown State Boise State 28–14
1995 Montana Marshall 22–20 1996 Marshall Montana 49–29
1997 Youngstown State McNeese State 10-9
1998 Massachusetts Georgia Southern 55–43
1999 Georgia Southern Youngstown State 59–24
2000 Georgia Southern Montana 27–25
2001 Montana Furman 13–6
2002 Western Kentucky McNeese State 34–14
2003 Delaware Colgate 40–0
2004 James Madison Montana 31–21
2005 Appalachian State Northern Iowa 21–16
2006 Appalachian State Massachusetts 28–17
2007 Appalachian State Delaware 49–21
2008 Richmond Montana 24-7
2009 Villanova Montana 23–21
2010 Eastern Washington Delaware 20–19

LA Tech made the championship game in 1984 but was beat by Montana State 19-6.

In 1973 and 1974 LA Tech was DII and not DI. In 1973 Tech won the DII National Championship with a 12-1 record by defeating Western Kentucky 34-0. I don't understand the way this is wrote. It has LA Tech as College Division National Champions. But Tech did not win the DII title in 1974. Tech was defeated by Central Michigan 35-14 and CMU would beat Delaware 52-14 the next week to win the DII National Championship.

Yeah, it's confusing. I don't know how they broke down the divisions before IA and IAA (or FBS and FCS).

And you're right about the Chippewas. I got my information from here:

http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/...nships.php

(which is obviously wrong). Tech won 1 national champions (DII) in 1973 and were runner ups (1AA) in 1984.

This is even more confusing: http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/...champs.php

Maybe we were national champions in the UPI poll or something?

That's what it was. CMU was the AP national champs and Tech was the UPI national champs... even though CMU beat Tech. The coaches must have thought it was a fluke.... 03-snooty

Many of the schools that are now in the NCAA's "Division I-AA" participated in the Division II playoffs, and were also ranked in the "small college poll", taken by both the UPI (coaches) and AP (a panel of writers). Louisiana Tech was ranked #1 by UPI while Central Michigan was #1 in the AP poll

RE: It's slow so - Thread from the WAC board
It is going to be interesting to watch UTSA and Texas St as they transition to FBS/D1A. The depth, talent, size and speed is so much different, even for the smaller conferences. It will take a couple of years to even get to their full compliment of 85 scholarship players....adding an additional 22 players takes a bit with only 25 scholarships per year.

While each of those schools have fine athletes (I assume) and may have individual players who are as good or better than some players on teams in FBS, they do not have the depth or overall talent/speed that they are going to see, even playing in a weakened WAC. WKU is a good example of a very good FCS/D1aa program who transitioned and they have takena beating. One of the WKU fans will have to tell me exactly how long it took them to get up to a full compliment of scholarship players.

Championships at lower levels don't really matter. Yes, a nice trophy is great. A label on a scoreboard or a banner hanging from the rafters are something to point to and pound your chest. Bottom line, they are about to start playing "big boy" football and they are going to find out that even those teams at the bottom of the rung have a lot more talent, speed, and players. Gonna be rough for a while.
