The way the transion years are set up now are a IAA school gets up to 85 scholarships in those 2 transion years. By the time they are playing a full IA schedule you have 85 scholarship players.

When we moved up in 1997, Marshall played the 1st year with 63 scholarship players and in 1998 we had 85 but only 66 scholarshp players actually played. The others were redshirts.

That may have changed. I thought USA was going with 85 scholly's this year even though they will not be fully transitioned for 2 years. That could have been message board smack though.

RE: It's slow so - Thread from the WAC board
According to a couple of football insiders here, MT just got to the full 85 last year after APR penalties back in the mid-2000's. We didn't take transfers down like WKU did (right before going 1-A).

This year will be the first time with some depth at 85 (able to redshirt with 85 last season).

Im pretty sure that this is the 2nd year of transition for USA.

I think they are a full confrence member in 2012.

Not certain though.

thanks for the input on transitioning and scholarships. I assume they would still be limited to 25 a year so depending on how they manage their rosters they maybe able to get up to full contingent a bit quicker or still could take a bit with graduation/eligiblity.

ASU won it in 1970, before D1AA existed, as well.

2011 is our first transition year and 2012 is the second. The Jags will be officially FBS in 2013. However, we began to function under FBS rules as of the end of the spring semester so we now have a 25 scholarship per year and 85 total limit. Also, we can no longer offer immediate eligibility to FBS transfers.
I would predict we'll be between 75-80 in 2013, after attrition.

RE: It's slow so - Thread from the WAC board
Until 1973 there was:
University Division
College Division I
College Division II

While roughly equivalent to today's Divisions I, II, and III they were different. You could play University Division in multiple sports but play football in College Division I or II. Moving divisions was basically a matter of not exceeding scholarship caps for the divisions (there were no minimums then) and playing at least 60% of your games against schools within the desired division.

The NCAA reorganized in 1973 and Divisions I, II, and III were created with some higher minimum standards. You could still be Division I in basketball and opt to play Division II football. Division II adopted a playoff in 1973 with its formation. Until 1973 the old University Division had no scholarship limits at all. In 1973 with the creation of Division I the limit became 105. At that time leagues set their own limits. SEC allowed 40 new per year. The SWC allowed 50! The Big 10 allowed 35 new per year. The Southland capped at 85 or 80 total.

There arose a desire to share the NCAA pot o' gold (which was the football TV contract) with fewer people and the desire of some schools to move out of Division II in football (in part because it caused confusion with fans being in two divisions) but who didn't want to give up the chance at post-season (Remember there are fewer than 15 bowls at this point). Division I football was then split into I-A and I-AA. If you sponsored a certain number of sports you could be I-A, if you didn't meet that requirement you could stay I-A by having a stadium of a certain size or meet attendance requirements. You had to play 60% of your games against teams in your desired sub-division with an exception for I-AA, they could count a I-A toward their schedule requirement. The I-A scholarship limit was dropped to 95 and the new I-AA's was set at 75.

At the end of 1981 desiring there to be fewer I-A schools the rules were amended. The stadium and attendance exception became the qualification manner.

From a historical stand-point, College Division I in football from around 1960 through 1972 and arguably Divisioin II football from 1973 until 1978 should be thought of as a "super division" containing the equivalent of Division II and I-AA playing jointly for a national title because there were so many schools that were University Division and later Division I in other sports that played down in football because they just couldn't keep up with the game in the unlimited scholarship era or 105 scholarship era.

Actually, it was our former AD that wasn't there. He was on a cruise with the rest of his family celebrating his parent's 50th wedding anniversary that was planned well before we knew WKU would be playing for a national title. Some have disagreed, but I think he made the right decision by being with his family on such a significant milestone over being at a football game, national title game or not. 04-cheers

I believe we are about 70. We'll need to see if every freshman makes it and there a couple of players who have decided to give up football.
