El Paso Times - Not Flattering WAC Article
WAC stature is dropping like a rock. El Paso Times takes their shot
http://elpasotimes.typepad.com/utepsport...mokes.html

Ho-li-SMOKES! The new Western Athletic Conference makes UTEP's Conference USA look like the Big 12 now.

Because of conference realignments, the WAC is trying to re-make its face with teams from real big cities, but teams that ... are more strangers than house-hold names in their own town

"What's usually not said is the LA, Dallas, Houston, et al big markets, don't love their littler schools. Dallas isn't SMU, it's Texas and Texas A&M, as one example."

No, that's well known... it just doesn't matter. The "potential" is there... and the TV networks love "potential" when you're talking little schools.

Little school, no. Big schools, yes. TCU has a small enrollment and few alumni. It is the price of being a small exclusive university. Even with several seasons of great success on the field over some of the most prominent programs in America, TCU still has trouble selling out there stadium. SMU has the same problem, but for them it is even worse, because they haven't had the same success as TCU. Large universities, in large markets, have a very unique advantage over other mid-major programs. When they can consistently win over the major programs, they advance quickly. It's the reason why South Florida was able to rise through the ranks of college football so fast.

No, television has great stacks of data that reveal the interest in such schools. Decades of data on Houston, Rice, SMU, TCU, Cincinnati, Louisville, UCF, USF, FIU, FAU, UNLV, San Diego State, Tulane, Memphis, UAB, Pitt, Georgia Tech, San Jose, Washington, USC, UCLA, Cal, Arizona State, etc.

The only blockbusters in large market teams have been USC, UCLA, and arguably Arizona State. Pitt, Louisville, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech are good draws but of them only Louisville has any hope of out-drawing a telecast of their less urbane in-state neighbor and if it is conference play UK is out-drawing them unless they are playing Ole Miss, Miss St, or Vandy.

ESPN does not go to the WAC, MAC, Sun Belt because of the drawing power of the schools, they go to them based on a willingness to play on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, or to take ESPNU telecasts on Thursday, Friday, or here and there on Saturday.

There are a certain number of slots to fill on those dates and ESPN will fill them and pay for them based on the slight ratings differences the schools offer and the level of cooperation the schools offer in taking those undesired dates. ESPN would be more interested in Montana than UTSA or Texas State that shows the level of brand awareness and audience.
