RE: Football Class of 2013
UC loses quarterback recruit

05/28/13 at 8:28am by Tom Groeschen

Brent Stockstill, a University of Cincinnati football quarterback recruit from the class of 2013, has been released from his National Letter of Intent after deciding he wanted to play for his father Rick at Middle Tennessee State.

UC spokesman Ryan Koslen said Stockstill is already enrolled at Middle Tennessee and is taking part in their summer program.

Stockstill (6-foot, 190) is from Murfressboro, Tenn. He was rated a three-star prospect by ESPN.com and 247Sports.com and a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Stockstill’s father told Tennessee reporters that the recent transfer of Gunner Kiel from Notre Dame to UC had nothing to do with his son leaving the Bearcats.

“Absolutely not,” Rick Stockstill told The Tennessean. “Our conversations actually started before the Gunner Kiel rumors even started. Brent was adamant about that. It had nothing to do with that. It started long before that, and anybody that knows Brent knows how much of a competitor he is.”

RE: Football Class of 2013
Bearcats steal one from Butch and thwart Urban (who apparently wanted him more as a punter):

Quote:UT preferred walk-on kicker Andrew Gantz going to Cincinnati in same capacity
By News Sentinel staff
Posted June 2, 2013 at 7:02 p.m., updated June 2, 2013 at 9:28 p.m.

Instead of walking on for first-year Tennessee coach Butch Jones, kicker Andrew Gantz announced Sunday he is going to Cincinnati — Jones’ last school — also as a preferred walk-on.

Gantz said on Twitter Sunday, “I will now be playing football at The University of Cincinnati, I had to make the best decision for my family and myself #Bearcats #UC”

Gantz is a three-star prospect and ranked the nation’s No. 7 kicker in the 2013 class by 247Sports. But the Vols already had options at kicker with Michael Palardy and George Bullock, and added 3-star kicker Aaron Medley to the 2014 recruiting class in March. Medley is the second-ranked kicker in the class by 247Sports.

“Some things changed recently,” Gantz told 247Sports on Sunday. “I have nothing bad to say about the University of Tennessee and the coaches there, but I felt like I needed to look at a better opportunity to get on the field. I want to play. I work hard every day, and I want to play. I think this gives me the best opportunity to play.”

When Gantz, from Dayton, Ohio, said he was walking on at Tennessee in January, he told GoVols247 he thought he would be starting at the beginning of the upcoming season.

“I wouldn’t have chosen the (walk-on) offer at Tennessee,” Gantz said in January, “unless I was pretty positive that I was coming in next year and winning the starting job.”

At least the Vol fans seem to be taking it in the right perspective (03-banghead):

From back when he committed to UT at the end of January:

Quote:Tennessee Volunteers Get Preferred Walk-On Kicker Andrew Gantz
By Brad Shepard on Jan 31 2013, 4:46p 14

Butch Jones and Andrew Gantz are not strangers.

For the past few years while Jones coached Cincinnati, Gantz -- a 5-foot-9, 170-pound kicker from Dayton, Ohio, would camp with the Bearcats. The two got to know each other and developed a relationship.

On Thursday, the three-star kicker and No. 8 kicker in the country according to 247Sports, accepted a preferred walk-on offer to join Jones and his new staff at the University of Tennessee. He's also rated as high as No. 6 in the nation, and his highlight video shows him hitting 50, 55 and 60 yard field goals. He was a member of Chris Sailer Kicking "Event Elite" top 12 kicker as well [whatever that is.]

Gantz had an offer from Utah and other smaller schools. He is known for having a good, strong leg and a quick swing, which is something that has plagued Michael Palardy during his time at UT. Gantz will compete with Palardy and George Bullock for placekicking duties this next year and especially in the future. He is also an exceptional kickoff specialist.

According to Sailer's website:

"Andrew is an outstanding kicker. He is a great athlete that kicks with nice consistency. Field goals are near the top of his class and kickoffs are D1 ready. A fine young man with a great attitude and work ethic. Kicks well under pressure. Has all the tools to excel at the college level. Is going to be a fine college kicker. Great pick up for Tennessee."

That site gives him its highest classification of a five-star kicker.

Gantz is the second specialist in the past week to accept a preferred walk-on offer from Jones. The other is Brad Spelman -- who is featured nicely here by GoVols247's Wes Rucker ($)) -- a 6-2, 205-pound longsnapper fromm Hilliard, Ohio, who was also offered preferred walk-on status by Cincinnati and Penn State. He visited Penn State this past weekend, but he committed to UT this week. Though J.R. Carr will retain his long-snapping role barring injury this year, Spelman will compete with Tennessee native and former Michigan State starter Matt Giampapa for the long-snapper job in two years...

Worked out with him numerous times over the past three years at camps I was teaching for. Fantastic kicker, one of the better all-around kickers I've seen come of out Ohio since I started the camp circuit back in 2003.

I like the look of it...not embracing it by any means. I was getting tired of the old C-paw.

Didn't know where else to put this and didn't want to create a new thread. It looks like Poteat will land back at Pitt. Crazy how things have gone full circle for him.

Originally committed to Pitt, plays at UC, transfers to a FCS school, and then walks on at Pitt.
