West Virginia looking for new conference?
Krux posted this on the expansion board. It came from the Louisville-Courier Journal and was written by Rick Bozich, who has it linked to the an article in the "National Football Post". I'm just posting this to let the West Virginia fans have their say about the article and the rumor.

Unrest in West Virginia football?

If you believe that, I have some prime beachfront Florida property to sell you:

The "rumors on the web" came from a Colin Dunlap tweet that said there rumors of news that was going to "rock the Big East." He later clarified that by saying it was going to rock "A SCHOOL IN" the Big East. But in between those tweets, some folks were speculating about what it could mean, including whether West Virginia was looking for a new conference.

Look in all honest, if the SEC or the Big Ten came calling, West Virginia would likely jump at it (as would any other school in the Big East). I don't honestly see either of those conferences moving toward West Virginia in the near future. I also don't know that it's a foregone conclusion that West Virginia would leap at an invitation from the ACC or the Big IIX. And the Pac-12's not adding West Virginia. So I don't think for a second that West Virginia is "looking for a new conference" any more than any other Big East member.

I do want to know why Slive said
"The commissioner of the SEC said during the Florida/Vanderbilt championship game in baseball the expansion of the conference would be discussed soon."

Does this have any teeth to it? They had their meetings last week and nothing came out of them about expansion, with the exception of WVU rumors

03-idea Is the SEC the first of the six BCS conferences to 16? West Virginia, North Carolina State, Missouri, and Texas A&M? 04-cheers

RE: West Virginia looking for new conference?
If the SEC decides to expand, and WVU is one of the teams they choose for expansion, everyone knows what the result will be. The same result if the SEC or Big Tin invited any other school in the conference. The BEast would be looking for a new member...

But the rumor that would rock The BEast, according to Colin Dunlap, is probably this one from SB Nation...

03-melodramatic Bit, I tell you the Syracuse and Connecticut fans are delusional, if they think that Big East football does not need Southern football schools to survive long term. 04-cheers

RE: West Virginia looking for new conference?
Not sure about the UConn fans, but many Syracuse fans are not so enamored with the Northeast football school choices for addition to the Big East (Delaware, UMass, Buffalo, Vanillanova, etc.). I will accept what the leadership decides because I like Syracuse, but I would rather hit Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Louisianna, Georgia, and would even consider a lunatic school from Utah, or the Air Force Academy to get us to 12.

As to WVU leaving, here are the possibilities:

B1G 10: Not happening, the school mission differs and this is important to the B1G 10, not AAU, either.
ACC: Too stuffy and self centered, they would not hold their collective noses to invite WVU and I don't think WVU would lower themselves to play in such an arrogant conference.
PAC 12: Too far, too stuffy, they hate guns, WVU loves guns, etc.
Big 12: WVU would have to consider an offer, but would weigh it heavily and consider whether the money difference is worth becoming another Texas puppet (translation: They would jumkp now, but might not be in a hurry once the new Big East contract takes effect)
SEC: Who wouldn't go, even Syracuse would consider joining them.

Syracuse would NEVER be asked to join the SEC. The Orange don't fit the culture. They never have, and never will.

Agreed, I made the statement that if the SEC came calling, SU would have to consider it. That's how much draw the SEC has right now.

If the SEC invited anyone, except possibly Texas and Notre Dame, they'd consider it. They'd be stupid not to...

WVU would go to the SEC. It badly wanted the spot that went to South Carolina

The ACC would be a more interesting call espcially with the new BE tv contract. Of course if the ACC wanted West Virginia, the Mountaineers would have been in decades ago.

I have not heard anything about WVU leaving since Texas A+M reconfirmed to the Big 12

If the SEC went to 16, as if they ever needed to, it would be two from the west (Okla, Texas A&M) and two from the East. Do not discount the interest of an ACC team (or four) to get one of those invites.

Personally, I'd like to see Georgia Tech back in the SEC where it belongs.

Georgia Tech won't rejoin the SEC. They are more culturally at home in the ACC...

Now Clemson would be a better fit in the SEC. They really don't have an ACC mentality...

If the SEC were to expand AND that expansion was 2 for the East and 2 for the West I think they would look at VT, NC State, and WVU in that order for the eastern teams.

Cheers,
Neil

I'm guessing FSU and Clemson would be the SEC's top two ACC targets.

Not sure what you mean about that. I'm not sure Tech ever fit the Tobacco Road culture the ACC cultivated--GT was a convenient fit after South Carolina left the league and the ACC was an uncomfortable seven teams.

Of course, if the Metro 7 had ever added football, this would be a different conversation...and message board...
