Some other good sci-fi movies that deserve consideration...

Tron
Batteries not included...
Cacoon
Mars Attacks!
(I just like seeing their brains explode when forced to listen to Slim Whitman)
Coneheads (you've got to include a Saturday Night Live skit)

I'm sure plenty of folks can come up with other examples...

I'll give you Mars Attacks-the head exploding is pretty clever

Here are some older sci-fi movies that I don't think have been mentioned...

The Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original - not the remake with Keanu Reeves)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
A Clockwork Orange
Blade Runner

Interesting you went sci-fi for A Clockwork Orange.

Not so sure... all they really did was take the main guy through some psychological experimentation. Didn't see any 'sci-fi" in what they did to him.

The entire premise is fictional, and psychology is science. It's not sci-fi in space, like you're used to. But it is a sci-fi...

Interesting List

It is an interesting list, although to be accurate, their title of "most acclaimed" isn't really correct. It's pretty much every comic book movie that had a big enough run to get valid critics' reviews. Some I was surprised to learn were comics/graphic novels (History of Violence, Road to Perdition). I think what that list really shows is there aren't very many quality films based on comic books. Finally: I can't believe Popeye has a rating as high as 51. To me, that movie is unwatchable. I oughta know - I tried.

I liked Sin City. That was a comic turned into a movie...

It wasn't sci-fi. But it was an excellent example of film noir...

Going out on a limb here a bit, but Sunshine is my favorite movie of the last 5 years. If they would re-do the hokey ending, it would be a masterpiece.

which part of the ending didn't you like? it didn't have that traditional hollywood ending, which i loved. spolier after a few viewings, i could never find out where that one dude came from. was he on that initial voyage? i was surprised at how much i liked it. i thought the concept was stupid and the only reason i watched it was cuz it was a boyle film. i was highly impressed

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is making a case for itself. Even though I guess a Transformers G1 Cartoon Purist might have some minor issues.

Popular mechanics goes all in w/ Top 100.

Original War of the Worlds comes in at #90 though, that's pretty insulting.

I think Avatar is an over rated movie. It's to much of a Pocahontas remake for me to take it seriously as a good sci-fi flick.

So glad to see someone else mention Sunshine. That movie is awesome.

I would definitely include Minority Report and I, Robot on honorable mention.

Not exactly the first thing people think of when they hear sci fi, but if you can consider dystopian future films sci fi, I'd throw Children of Men in the mix as well.

EDIT: Glad to see Sunshine, Minority Report and Children of Men all make Popular Mechanics list.

i hate watching children of men, even though it's one of the movies i've seen the most. it's so heartbreaking and bleak. it's as if they're clinging onto the last thread of humanity throughout the film.

anybody seen moon?

GATTACA

If you haven't seen it. It's worth the watch.

Empire Strikes back was better than Star Wars but both solid.

Dune

and I also liked Stargate. A little campy but a neat story.

Did anyone mention "District 9"? It's a fantastic Sci-Fi film, one of my favorites. It was even nominated for best picture in the 2010 Oscars, which is rare for a Sci-Fi flick. *It's #27 in the Popular Mechanics list Torch posted.

There seem to be some disagreement on here but I would put "Alien" in a top 10 and I might even put "Prometheus" in there as well. I really enjoyed "Prometheus" but it seemed to be a love or hate kind of film.

And speaking of great Sci-Fi films it's looking like 2013 will have some good ones:

"World War Z" comes out in June. I've read the book and honestly the movie looks nothing like the book but it still looks good.

"After Earth" also comes out in June. It looks like it has potential but it's M. Night Shyamalan, whose last few movies, in my opinion, really sucked.

"Oblivion" comes out in April. It stars Tom Cruise but it looks strong.

Then of course there is "Star Trek into Darkness" that comes out in May. I'm really looking forward to that one

I forgot about "Moon"! Fantastic film. It's an independent film that had a limited release. I saw it on Netflix and thought it was brilliant. Very underrated Sci-Fi film.
