OT - Were The Ancient Gods Aliens?
I'm wanting to test the waters on this, as this is a far cry from the usual sports, political, and financial ideas that populate this board.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on whether what the ancient egyptians and greeks revered as gods, were actually aliens. And more importantly, your thoughts on whether aliens have visited Earth in the past, and if they're still here undercover.

Personally, I don't think we're going to find any intelligent beings within my lifetime. So our only hope for the next 60 to 80 years is for us to uncover something on our own planet, or for them to find us.

I have a theory that the latter of those two options would not be very good for humanity. I think if any group of intelligent beings ever found us, we would be enslaved much like we have dominion over the lesser beings on our planet (animals) and much like the way we took over our own continent from its earlier inhabitants.

I can't figure out how to go back and add poll options, but another obvious option is that the ancient gods were neither gods nor aliens. I'm on the fence, as I believe they were either aliens, or neither.

Short term immediate prognosis would be very very bad. Long term though for those who make it outside of population centers and survive would be better. Much like any war, the long term favors a small insurgency than make unpleasant for the invaders.

Aliens = Vivid Imagination.

Nearest habitable planets are many, many light years away. Can one travel at the speed of light, only in a sci-fi movie. Therefore too far away even if life does exist in other solar systems.

RE: OT - Were The Ancient Gods Aliens?
you had to phrase it like a practical logic question...

yes I think there are aliens
yes people believe/believed in god/gods
but were the gods aliens.... possibly

maybe they were entirely, maybe the siting of aliens just made them start believing in gods, it is possible, I guess we can never be 100% sure, but there tends to be a lot of evidence that could favor the theory.

RE: OT - Were The Ancient Gods Aliens?
This is a subject that I find fascinating.

Not to get on too big of a sidetrack but have you read Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near?

If not read it! Maybe the single most important book of the last ten years. It is not about aliens per se, but I think it is relevant when discussing the possibility.

People don't have too hard of a time accepting that there are aliens out there because there are just too many stars out there. But as FIUFan pointed out the distances are so great that it seemingly is impossible that they could have come here.

But if technology continues to increase at an exponential rate and if we are able to harness computing power to enhance our own intelligence (it will happen in the next century) then maybe it will not seem so impossible in the relatively near future.

And if other civilzations are years or centuries or even eons ahead of us then maybe it is already not so impossible for them.

I do not think that aliens that come here will be hostile. The technology required to travel those distance would mean that any civilization capable of them would have long since solved the relatively easy problem of limited resources.

You have to expand your thinking.

Look at the advances in science that have been made in the past 150 years. Can you imagine what it will be like if the advances keep pace for another 150 years?

How long have we been on this Earth? 200,000 years? 4 milliion? Depends on who and what you believe in....but the past 150 years is barely a hiccup in the timeline in either belief system. Either way, 'we' as a species are a fairly slow learner.

I believe in God and the fact that He created the 'heavens and the Earth'...but He may or may not have stopped there. Who's to say we were the first or last universe He created? And if there are others out there, it's not very hard to believe that they may have advanced at a much steadier or quicker rate than we have.

Kind of the point of the National Geographic Channel program. Short term we get our arses handed to us and civilization is destroyed. Long term a low tech war makes them give up and leave after years.

I've been watching Ancient Aliens on Netflix. Absolutely fascinating. There's a lot of compelling theories in episode one that get you thinking.

My vote was a joke, I think if aliens were visiting we'd have more proof. I used to believe in aliens growing up but my faith in God has eradicated that. The chances of another planet producing anything similiar to what we have here at Earth is non exhistant, I believe God designed everything and the devil uses the thought of aliens as another tool to disprove the almightyness of God and the uniqueness of the Human Being created in his own likeness.

RE: OT - Were The Ancient Gods Aliens?
Ancient Aliens is interesting tv, but that's about it. The producers are never keen on interviews with a scientific rebuttal. In the late 90's, I got hooked on Art Bell and 'In Search of..' reruns, as it was entertaining to imagine such things. Then, I got into the works of guys like Michio Kaku (when I first heard him on Coast-to-Coast) and Neil deGrasse Tyson, guys who made the workings of the universe and life easy to understand. Now, I see Linda Moulton Howe and George Noory on AA and it's sad. AA 'theory' is no different than myth, religion, and astrology. They leap-frog to a conclusion without evidence, then try to back-track to find evidence, which isn't science. It's even more sad when they try to link Biblical 'events' to AA 'events'.

All "belief", like emotions, 'good and evil', hope, myth, superstition, are just chemical reactions in our noggins, based on our genetics and environment. They are learned through one's culture. In our culture, there are many people who either don't accept or understand science, in many cases not accepting we are basically no different than any other life form. They think there are massive questions that need answering, when in fact science has covered most of the 'big questions'. The brain still puzzles us, as does what happened prior to the Big Bang, and developing a unified theory for all forces. But things like ''What is the meaning of life?" and 'Where did we come from?", and 'How did civilizations do such amazing things?' are answered...some people just don't like the answers.

RE: OT - Were The Ancient Gods Aliens?
Ellen White was an Adventist prophet that believed in aliens but that we were the only fallen planet. Aside from that, I believe they would have to exist (there are trillions of stars in a galaxy and trillions of galaxies...that's a lot of planets). As far as travelling at the speed of light, a person wouldn't have to travel at those speeds if they could figure out how to bend space. Now I have to go and eat my breakfast burrito.

Dont' kid yourself about Kaku.

He's proven to be just as fantastically wrong on things as Bell and Nouri.
