Congrats to all, I didn't think the BE would get two at-large bids.

Good luck to all the Big East schools in the post-season tournament!

Speaking of the Big East, with a split conference, you would have UConn as the only school competing for a bid to go to Omaha. I guess the BEast cannot avoid the Huskies dominance in all-sports. 03-phew

Here's an article with comments from the Chair of the selection committee pertaining to the process, including why St Johns got in:

Wow, 3 BE teams getting on the regionals is a pleasant surprise.

From the article i posted, it seems like the NCAA selection committee has changed its approach from looking strictly at 'merit' as defined by things like RPI and NPI, towards achieving greater conference/geographical diversity, which essentially means more northern and northeastern teams.

That works for the Big East, obviously ... :)

Congrats to all three teams, especially for Seton Hall who I give an awful hard time to.

Cheers,

I applaud the selection committee for giving 2 at large bids to the Big East. If College baseball is ever going to catch on as a national sport(rather than just a regional one) then Northern schools need an opportunity to prove themselves in the NCAAs. Well we got one this year. Good luck to Seton Hall, St. John's, and UCONN. Now get out there and prove yourselves.

Also.... 2 bids to 1, the football schools can't compete! 05-stirthepot 04-chairshot 04-cheers

Guess you forgot that TCU also got in and would be on the football side in case of a split

Surprised St John's made it in but good luck to all three! I have a hard time getting worked up about LSU sitting at home after they finished 6-17 against the top 10 in the SEC.

I've criticized LSU fans for whining/bitching about getting left out, but in fairness, many in the local forums have been more circumspect. Their argument has been "yes, we were not a very good team this year, had a losing conference record, lost a lot of key games, certainly weren't a threat to make the CWS, but ... despite all that, we were still better/more deserving than some of the teams that got at-large bids, like St Johns".

And they are probably right about that.

Well they can cry all they want cause they are not getting in. This is not college football where they got bunch of media whores pimping them for the annual popularity contest.

I do like that the committee called out the fact that LSU only played three road non conference games. I totally understand why LSU does play so many home games due to the revenue they produce from baseball, but it is easier to win at home and I am glad the committee took notice of a team like St. Johns who went on the road a lot.

I agree about playing more road games, i don't really care about the OOC part (to me, a good team is a good team, whether in your conference or not).

Even there though, there is something to be said for quality vs quantity. St Johns played 8 more road games overall, but LSU played 2 more road games against teams that made the NCAA tournament.

As Husky said, it's a moot point now, but when i look at the totality of the evidence, i don't think there's much doubt LSU was more deserving than St Johns. It probably didn't hurt that the St Johns AD was on the selection committee.

That said, no NCAA tournament in any sport is based purely on 'deserving', or who was 'best', otherwise there wouldn't be all those auto-bids for the small-conference teams that obviously aren't as good as either St Johns or LSU. Another goal is to achieve geographical and conference diversity, and so picking St Johns makes sense, since it helps build awareness of the event up north.
