Great awards as usual. USA deserves the Apathetic Fan award this season.
Not sure about the Steve Shields Nice Guy thing. I was rooting for UALR last night, but I can still remember Shields having to be restrained from going into the crowd in Mobile one year and I seem to recall that that happened somewhere else in the conference too. I assume off the court he is much more pleasant.
Back when you had crowds? Just asking, was his comments off on that as well?
I'm pretty sure I read correctly that AJ agreed that USA deserved the most apathetic crowd. Maybe I'm missing something?
Apparently I'm missing it too. I did say I agreed with the USA fans award.
Yes you did sir, my apology. But he was also correct on the most valuable freshman as well.
I think I'll trust the collective wisdom of the league coaches and media when it comes to which freshman was the best.
BTW, Rubit was named 2nd team All-District by the NABC. No sign of any other freshmen there.
ANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of South Alabama redshirt freshman Augustine Rubit has added to his season honors by being named Second Team National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District.
Rubit, the 2010-11 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, was also tabbed to the All-SBC Third Team and was the last player of the week of the regular season. He is the first South Alabama player to earn the league’s top rookie award since Jeff Hodge in 1986 and the first-ever Jaguar named to an all-conference team as a freshman.
The Houston, Texas native currently leads the conference and is sixth in the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.0 per game. His average is first among Division I freshmen and his 14 double-doubles share the top spot with Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger.
Rubit averaged 13.1 points per contest, second on the team and 12th in the league. He scored 20 or more a team-high five times, including a career-high 26 at Middle Tennessee. He grabbed 18 rebounds in a game twice.
He also ranks first in the Sun Belt in offensive rebounds (4.5 rpg), second in defensive rebounds (6.5 rpg), fourth in field goal percentage (.559) and seventh in blocked shots (1.1).
