Kirk Sets School Record In Win

DENTON, Texas (3/5/11) - North Texas redshirt freshman Ashley Kirk set a school strikeout record in a 9-0 win against the Wichita State softball team on Saturday night at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green defeated Ole Miss, 4-3, in its first game of the day.
The Mean Green improves to 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the Courtyard Classic. Wichita State (6-13), UTA and UTEP (11-8) all follow with two wins apiece.
Kirk picked up both of the Mean Green's wins on Saturday. She pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the 4-3 win against Ole Miss. She started the game against Wichita State and set a school record with 14 strikeouts. She pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits in seven innings of work.
North Texas came back from a 3-0 deficit against Ole Miss. Lesley Hirsch and Brooke Foster both posted RBI singles in the third inning to tie the game for the Mean Green. Senior Courtney Bradshaw posted her second game-winning hit of the season with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
In the win against Wichita State, North Texas used 14 hits to score nine runs in seven innings. Senior Mallory Cantler sealed the win with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. It was her first home run of the season.
Brooke Foster gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single. The freshman is currently second in the tournament with six RBI. She posted two hits in the 9-0 win.
Jordan Terry drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to bring in a second run for the Mean Green, and Jackie Miller posted a pinch-hit two-RBI double to give North Texas a 4-0 lead. Megan Rupp and Cantler both brought home runners in the fourth to add to the lead. Cantler led the team with four RBI in the win.
Kirk leads the tournament with a 3-0 record, a 0.00 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in 16 innings of work.
North Texas finishes up play in the Courtyard Classic with a 3 p.m. game against Wichita State on Sunday, March 6 at Lovelace Stadium.
